My computer I just got not to long ago, I have a Gateway GT5670 AMD Phenom 8400 triple core processor, 3 gigs of RAM, and 320 GB Hard Drive. All I really need for this machine is a graphics card and a better PSU. You can upgrade this machine quite a bit. It has Windows Vista Home preimium SP1 and runs it flawlessly. My old computer was a Gateway with a celeron D 2.66 GHz processor and 2 GB RAM and that machine had no slot to install a better graphics card.
I built a: Biostar tf560 motherboard AMD 5000+ Black Edition X2 2gig ddr2 800 RAM 80gig hd Nvidia 7950gt OC Onboard sound AC888 (I think) Optiquest Q20wb 20in LCD 1680X1050 Doesn't play the heavy stuff like World in Conflict and the newer games, but I don't really play too many commercial games anyway. Mostly myspace games such as Mobsters or flash games.
That should play the heavy games just fine. I bet the video card driver is old or the standard 2D driver. Go to Nvidia.com and download the latest driver for true 3D support. Then you will be rockin.
My main system build from scratch running dualboot debian /arch/slackware linux Processor:AMD Phenom X4 9750+ Videocard:ATI X3850Pro 512mb Ram:4096mb / 4GB DDR2 800Mhz Hdd:1000GB(1x1TB) 32Mb Media: DVD +/-RW DL + LableFlash my firewall/router:Soekris net 4801 -48 running Freebsd
Oh it'll play World in Conflict demo to an extent. But I have to lower settings and stuff to get a good frame rate. That game's a beast!
Amd aint the chip to have compared to intel at the present time coz amd's are power hungry run very hot and not very clockable and only 65mns technology at best. Best chip i'd say at present time is any intel wolfdale core. My wolfdale e8400 stock speed is 3gigs but happily runs at 4 and even 4.5 gigs with some pushing even my mates intel dual core 2.5 wolfdale very cheap chip around 60 pounds in uk which is all by name a dual core2 duo its kinda like ya celeron version with its cut down cache will do 4 gigs. As for 4 cores and above when they come not that good at the moment due to slow speeds and lack of software support.
The best chip eh? Best chip for what? Some chips are better than others for each different application and environment. You can break 4Ghz with an Intel chip but that doesn't mean it's better for everything. AMD is technically better for games because the Northbridge sits right on the chip. Less hops across the mobo to transfer data in/out of the RAM and Video card. Intel is better for crunching numbers, clocking, and synthetic benchmarks. Although, technically the Intel sub-architecture is a bit slower for gaming. It's all about what you want to do with the machine. :cheers2:
Fair point that one. Amd do have the 3d now instruction set thats supported by direct x. Btw have you notice from direct x 8 to 10 not really been much changes apart from bump mapping volcometic or what ever they call it smoke effects and shading so that would suggest the rasta draw method is reaching its limit and only really speed that can be added. Whooo hooo maybe a return to cpu drawing again lol
Mine is a Compaq Presario, DVD+RW/DL burner, 2 gig ram, ATI Raedon 1650x Pro series, 160 Seagate Harddrive. It could use a RAM upgrade, maybe jsut replace the 2 gig sticks, and a new video card wouldn't hurt either.
Dell Vostro 1700, Intel[R] Core [TM] duo CPU, T5670 @ 1.80GHz, 789 MHz, 0.99 GB or RAM I don't know a whole lot about computers, but I bought this one because I needed a laptop, and I do a TON of ten key. (I do accounting.) This laptop has a ten key pad on it, and a larger screen than most laptops. I love it.
I have a SONY desktop I bought about 5 years ago. It was top of the line then and is still better than many made today. 512mb RAM , 180GB memory , Pentium 4 CPU 3GHZ. Cdr drive and dvd-r drive. 2 things I really love about this computer are the speed, and the service. For the first three years, if anything went wrong with it(and I did burn out 2 modems while on dial up long ago), Sony would send someone to your house within 2 days and it would all be fixed for free. Otherwise, I have had no other problems with this computer whatsoever, and it is still faster than many of what my friends have, new or old.
This is just my backup system until I get the big boy done!!! I paid ATI to make a Linux kernel for the card I want. You're welcome to the drivers Linux users when I get it and it works flawlessly. My old windblows computer would sustain 200+ fps on doom3, 60+ fps in the most strenuous situation on world of warcraft (if a city got raided, I would be the oonly one not dying with 60 fps) laughing my ass off.
That sounds like a powerful rig. I'd be interested in the ATI kernel module. What type of ATI video card is this for? (I hope you don't mind that I clipped for a quote.)
Mine is a business computer from Dell - Vostro 200 mini tower a little over a year old. - Windows XP Professional - Intel Core 2 Duo processor 1.6 Ghz - 160 GB hard drive - 2 GB RAM - CD/DVD burner - 17" flat panel monitor - Microsoft Office 2003 Professional Edition Nothing really fancy. It does what I want it to do very well (web surfing, e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.).
