why do they call them tophats?

they dont make bottomhats, do they?

i mean, i've heard of asshats. so i guess maybe those are "bottomhats" if you put it politely.

but somehow i have the feeling a tophat isnt the opposite of an asshat....

I think the term came about because they were taller (topped all) than other hats.

 

I think a tophat IS the opposite of an asshat.

 

I like the word "asshat." It's a good insult. It's like, "Oh yeah, well, you're like a hat that somebody wears on their ass!"
