Hello all found this site when doing a search for DIY natural dreads. I have hair down to my waist. I do nothing but wash it with baking soda and rinse with vinegar and peppermint tea.
I have been looking into dreading my long hair without cutting because I just want to be natural. Let it do its own thing, but at the same time I know my hair and I do not want a giant knot (which she likes to do...lol) I am not big on chemicals or getting all fancy schamncy with the hair products or makeup etc...I like natural and to me dreads are just natural and so damned beautiful.

Let's see what else...I upcycle clothing and things. I am a single parent and I homeschool my son. I also am teaching him about honoring the earth and life itself. Some may not agree to this but I am going back to my native american roots and will begin the process of studying native american shamanism.

    Ok I am done rambling...LOL.

    HELLO ALL! :D

Ah yes here is my hair now right after washing personally I think it screams for dreads...LOL

after u wash just keep ripping em into the size sections u want to maintain so they dont try forming 1 big dread

in the early stageds u may have to do this more often..

    Thank you..

Yea I have really tight curls since I stopped all chemicals (relaxers, crappy shampoos, etc) so the old baby tight curls came back so they like to form one massive knot easily...but I will remember to separate to prevent that.

hey! man i wish had found this site when my babies were born almost a year and a half ago. i had so many questions and stuff haha. the info on dreadhq and the like just didn't make sense to me, like why would you put sooo many products in your dreadies?? i only backcombed my hair the once and hey presto! now they are my most favoritest thing. aaand i can't believe how quick they are growing its awesome.
but you know what, i still can't muster up the courage(?) to talk to someone with way cool dreads or look them in the eye (thats usually cos i am gazing in awe) haha maybe one day!

    cheers love the site =]

    hola! Call me snoop.
I'm a native of Detroit, MI, soon to be relocated to Phoenix, AZ
I'm a new new NEW dreadie, 7 days and counting. I've also been lurkin around here for a couple weeks just reading up on things, you guys have some pretty wonderful advice. Hopefully if I end up with any questions (which i'm almost positive i will) i might be able to come here for answers.

    hey all!
    i'm Constance!
i have been seriously debating dreading my hair.. but as it's still pretty short i think i'm going to let it grow out a good bit before i do.
    long dreads are great :D
i guess i don't really belong in this forum as much because of my lack of knots.. but i love it just as much!
i'm glad to see a lot of people have advised to not put wax in.. which i definitely would have ended up doing..

i would like some of you guys' opinions!
think my hair would do well?

there is no "belonging" here as i've come to find out. you share that mutual love of the dread which makes you welcome. your hair looks like it might to well to lock. why not start now, while its short?

well i'm glad to hear i'm welcomed :D

    since it's still pretty short
and i know that once your hair starts locking up it shrinks..
i feel it would look super weird if i had super short dreads
and that dreads grow slower than non-dreaded hair..

i mean.. i've had REALLY short hair before
    but never dreaded hair

i wanted to let it grow a bit before i dreaded it, so it would be more feminine

do you not think it matters?
it's still a day to day debate with myself as if i'm just going to say eff it, and do it anyways..

i think i'd pull them off well
but then again.. i'll never know untill it's too late and i have to chop all my hair off, haha.

personally, I dont think it matters. the profile of your face has this very cute, kinda tomboy-ish look to it, so I think that even once the dreads started to tighten and shrink, you'd still look wonderful. Of course it's your hair so in the end its your choice, just one man's opinion.

btw, Hi Constance, I'm Snoopy! :D
