Took twenty years, but it's now acknowledged that the veterans of the first gulf war actually suffer/ed from a real disease related to their actions in the war. How many have died, how many are on the streets, how many marriages were ruined and how many children born to those veterans were affected. How many years were they denied benefits and withheld treatment?

Just goes too prove how much governments care about their citizens. Very little. Just the the rest of this disposible society they have created. Once something is of little value to them they discard it in the trash, be it an inanimate object or a person.

I think the US military and the VA passed much of these problems off as isolasted incidences, and did not extend the amount of support and research as they should have. But I also think that education in the field is something that needs to be addressed. Troops need to be aware of what chemicals are in the products that they spray or rub into their skin, and what the appropriate dosage is. Sprays and lotions are often provided and there is usually not clear information on the proper application.

Some people have more problems with pests than others and they often do whatever they can to keep them away, with disregard to what harm they may be causing to their bodies. Medics should be educating troops on what the effects of pesticide misuse is. In the field it is not uncommon to use animal flea and tick collars, which are effective but also contain chemicals that are dangerous, and the amount of toxic pesticide that is absorbed directly through the skin could cause later health problems. There are DEET based products that can be just as effective as the more harsh permethrin based products. Also, the proper dosage and usage of medication (PB pills in the case of ODS) is an area of education and monitoring that needs to be addressed.

Overall I believe that while testing of the PPM's and treatment of the side effects are very important, equal emphasis should be put on the education of usage.

I use permethrin all the time. It's an insecticide derived from chrysanthemums. It's safe to spray on vegetables up to the day of harvest. It's also used to make clothing insect resistant, and when used properly is much safer than deet, which should also not be applied directly to the skin, imho.

Deet will eat through a neoprene glove in seconds. Why put it on your skin?

i didnt see any reference to the lymphoma many have contracted since then in the article..

i have a friend and fellow forum member suffering with lymphoma and they think its probably from the depleted uranium exposure. i have seen many more gulf war veterans suffering from the same disease yet there was no mention of it in the article..

    sad..

MaryJohn? Wrong! MAJORLY Wrong!!! i can send you ALL of the stuff i have on permethrin, but it's pretty long for posting, so i'm just going to do this:

Allow me to point you to a truly safe pesticide, NEEM Oil. Here's what the EPA has to say about it on their website:

    http://www.epa.gov/opp00001/biopesticides/ingredients/factsheets/factsheet_025007.htm

Perhaps your Farmer's Market should be re-evaluating the pesticides they use... :(

The lymphoma thing may be related to the use of BOTH permethrin and DEET:

    Here's the webpage:

my bad, I was thinking of pyrethrins, not permethrin. very similar sounding.

I use neem oil as well, but once in a while you have to use something stronger.

My MAIN concern with Pyrethrins and Permethrins is the water contamination factor and the fact that, once it hits the water, every fish in that water will die. Also, i don't know if you noticed, but it also kills several Endangered Species, as well as beneficial insects.

My secondary concern is with the amount that is left on our foods, and especially on/in Baby Food products.

Last, but not least, is the Asthma factor, which YOU should be protecting yourself from by using masks. i don't know how you protect the children and other folks that live around you, other than switching to a different, and safer, pesticide.

i think it's really important for EVERYONE to understand that spraying themselves with Off or Cutter (which both contain DEET)

and then going out to spray down their plants with Permethrins

    IS SUPER DANGEROUS!!!

I had a friend that was in the Gulf War he claimed that once their was an alert and they all went and hid in a bunker and their was some blasts and after they blasts they whole group of them was sick and dizzy for weeks and not right for a while after.

He told me it permanently mess him up and he thought it was some kind of nerve gas or something. He never tried to make a claim or anything he just dealt with it.

According to the report, Gulf War illness is a "complex of multiple concurrent symptoms" that "typically includes persistent memory and concentration problems, chronic headaches, widespread pain, gastrointestinal problems, and other chronic abnormalities."

sounds like my problems. i'm probably exposed to all sorts of toxins right here at home, despite my best measure.

    Oh, yes indeed, you ARE!

Who would have thought that spraying Insect Repellant on yourself to go out and spray your garden could KILL you?

What about the mixture of ammonia and bleach? And yet we can still buy BOTH types of cleaners, and accidently mix them...

Anymore, you practically have to be a chemist if you want to protect yourself and your family.

Thank God for Free School online!

The blast percussion can be enough to cause hearing damage that can resulting in loss of equilibrium (dizzyness) as well as brain trauma (concussion), resulting in loss of vision, headaches, dizziness, etc... Not saying this is his case, but definitely is not uncommon.
