Hey everyone I used to have dreadlocks back in 2006 for about a year before I cut them off. I got over them but then I realized how much I miss them. There like cranium babies. Anyway the method used back in 2006 was the section off rubberband backcomb palm roll with wax. I know many on here are against wax but the dreadlocks actually turned out pretty decent. The only issues where some tips not dreading and lots of loose hairs around the cornered sections. I'm guessing to much wax was the cause of this? (If anyone knows the answer?) because when I first started the man who backcombed them all a used very little wax but I think I got to wax friendly. So yea, imo wax sucks and if you're going to use it use a very small amount. Now my new question is about dread perms. I recently talked to a reputable salon known for performing dread perms and told them about how I've been teasing my hair for the last 2 months and using natural shampoo. They told me not to tease my hair because itll make their job harder and not benefit me. I was just wondering how exactly teasing my hair (I.E me using my finger in class to curl it or twist it) is actually bad for a dread perm? And if anyone is wondering I have Caucasian hair that tends to be wavy more then straight or curly. So does anyone have some advice on what route to go? I'm pretty sure i'm not going to go the natural rejection way because most people with dreadlocks I have talked to have told me it takes longer and is unpredictable. I always take the time to ask a white person how they got there dreads and most answers seem to be the dread perm or back combing with little wax. But do you guys have any suggestions?
well the dreadelitist will tell you to buy some dr. b and stop brushing your hair. i personally dont mind backcomb. you dont need to presection your hair just grab a small portion of hair and start backcombing dont wash for 3-7days and your golden. dont go to a salon to get your dreads done they will fill em up with chemicals and tell you to come back for maintenance sessions. which cost money. and thats all they want. ps i have dont backcombing with out wax and not sectioning it and they are great. they are just a little finicky when they are young. wear some panty hose over your head that should encourage them not to fall apart
My advice, never trust anyone making money of creating "dreads". Dread perms are perms not dreads. Dreads form over time by weaving and knotting in and out of each other over a long period of time. This process can be altered with backcombing but there is still about that same waiting period before you will have dreadlocks...It's just part of it get use to it.
Wax: My advice is to stay away from the wax, and anyone that would tell you to use it. Backcombing: Backcombing is a good way to create the size of your dreads and section them off. Salons: When dealing with a salon, find out their procedure. I got my hair back-combed, and THEN permed at a salon. The perm is all but relaxed out, and the dreads are sectioned off nicely. You'll still need to go through the same growth stages as regular back-combing, but I feel like there's an advantage to adding the perm for us straight hair whiteys. Natural: You can also go totally natural. Just wash your hair as needed, and leave it.
id backcomb to get them started and sectioned how you want, and then leave them to tangle how they wish,, just dont use wax
if you do backcomb, i suggest you don't go checkerboard style...mix it up a little, different sizes and not all perfectly aligned.
