    What Americans Want

    They want to vote for President George Bush.

    CNN/USA TODAY/GALLUP POLL

    FOR RELEASE: Sunday, October 17 at noon

    Interviews with 1,013 adult Americans, including 788 likely voters and 942 registered voters, conducted by telephone on October 14-16, 2004

    Although Americans think John Kerry did the best job in the debates, that has not translated into an increase in his popularity, which in turn means that he appears to have lost a little ground to Bush. Among registered voters, a 48%-48% tie is now a 49%-46% edge for Bush -- not much of a difference and, with the sampling error, not a significant change. The Gallup likely voter model, which identified those respondents who are most likely to cast a ballot, is magnifying those shifts, with a 49%-48% advantage for Kerry turning into a 52%-44% lead for Bush. What's going on?

    For one thing, the charge that Kerry is too liberal, which Bush emphasized mostly in the third and last debate on Wednesday night, seems to be sticking. Nearly half say Kerry's political views are too liberal. (Four in ten say Bush is too conservative.) But didn't Kerry win the debate? Yes, as with the first two debates, the public thinks Kerry did the better job on Wednesday night. But as Al Gore learned in 2000, winning a debate on points does not necessarily translate into votes or make a candidate more popular. As in 2000, Bush's favorable ratings -- Americans view of him as a person -- went up after a debate that he lost. Kerry's favorable rating has remained flat. Republicans seem more enthusiastic about the election, and thus more likely to vote, as reflected in the Gallup likely voter model.

    Bush may have energized his base in the final debate at the expense of not appealing to a wider audience -- but he managed to do so in a way that made him more popular than Kerry.

    It's the reason he got such a big bounce out of the convention. {And Kerry didn't.}

    It's the reason his poll numbers hang around even in the face of the most vicious partisan attacks from every conceivable source including biased news reporting, his own poor performances at the debates, and every possible celebrity who supposedly commands respect coming out against Bush.

    Letterman cracks a snide remark, the "Applause" sign comes on, and the audience cheers. Leno calls a newspaper to report, "I'm not a republican!" Dan Rather -- well I don't even have to say.

    But thru it all Bush poll numbers hold up.

    Most people don't like to go against the grain, and they don't like to argue, so they just keep quiet in the face of vicious onslaught. But People want to vote for him.

    Thank God for Democracy.
    And God bless America.

    I don't trust the polls, in this state alone they do not poll the 700,000 new voters, and the people who have only cell phones...the polls are meaningless in this election and the fact that they are close is a positive thing for the challenger, not the incumbant

    I want to know how anyone can think the polls are accurate. Most of my friends (who are voting for Kerry) have cell phones only, no land lines. They are not being polled. New voters are not being polled. I've never been polled.

    Old, out-of-touch, stuck-in-the-past people are getting polled more I'm sure. They will vote for Bush more than likely.
    Also most polls don't mention their partisan bias. The people they polled may have been 58% Republican and only 40% Democrat. That poll would surely be inaccurate.

    Isn't anyone out there talking to people? I went with a group canvasing today, we got through to a good number of people. Lots of signs were put up. I saw a huge number of yard signs today too in a neighborhood I don't frequently go through, what a beautiful sight. There are some Bushler/Satan signs too, but I think Kerry/Edwards signs outnumbered them. YAY!

    There is actually an article I read the other day..on msnbc where they were saying, they think the numbers of voters voting for Kerry are probably way higher because of the polls being not into todays technology, most people have cell phones..and they only call people with home phones..they also say the younger people that have responded are voting for Kerry..and most of them carry cell phones :)

    See this is precisely what I am saying. {Bushler/Satan???}

    The attack from the left has been so viscious, and so pervasive that most people just don't want to even say anything.
    They don't want to be attacked.
    They don't want to face the attackers.
    So they just keep quiet.

    But in their hearts, they really do WANT the President to do well.
    And when they have the cover of anonymity, in a poll, or in a voting booth....

    Well I guess I think this is the President's election to lose. If he doesn't do anything extremely bad between now and Movember 2, he'll win.

    And there isn't really anything Kerry, or Kerry Supporters can do about it, because it isn't even about Kerry.
