post links to online shops where you can get wraps, tams, beads, coils, even shampoo... anything dread-related. preferably small shops so we can support independent businesses! if you make your own stuff, post pictures of it.
Ino knottyboy.com they have coils tams all that stuff dont by there dread products or anything from them that is used to make dreads. Dreadheadhq.com also dont by no dread products from them u can buy your beads and tams. But thats a couple places ill find more.
Wat you meen by support them. Thats not like donating right cause i would never donate to any of those 2.
yeah, i don't buy stuff from them because they are really popular and they advocate using wax on dreads. i can't support that. i don't mean donate, i mean buy their product.
both those shops got alot of great beads, i especially like the hand painted ones with intricate patterns. but what i did was go to a regular bead shop and looked for beads with larger than usual holes and just made them bigger with different sized screw drivers and sandpaper
Ohhh this makes me want to RANNNNT!! Last year, I bought 10 BEAUTIFUL butterfly coils from knottyboy. Cost me an absolute fortune. When they arrived 3 butterflies were missing as were the coils to attach them to my hair... So I emailed them to say that they were missing and I'd recieve them in 7-10n days. 16 days later I emailed them again to say that they still hadn't arrived. Again. "Were so sorry we'll send them out tomorrow." I never did get them. So yeah. Knotty boy stole my money and my items. I emailed them a few weeks ago actually saying how disappointed I was with their customer services and that they never sent my missing items. They never replied.
polymer clay is a good alternative as well. just wrap some wire around a pen to use as a frame and then cover it with some polymer clay then bake it. if you got skills in hand painting plus a little creativity then this is a great option for custom beads that are really cost effective and this way you're sure your beads wont get lost in the post. knottyboy and the like are only good for purchasing really sick glass beads in my opinion
also, try craft stores or places where they sell stuff for scrapbooking, i found some really nice ones in our local bookstore but didnt buy them cuz my dreads were getting too crowded
I crochet extra large hats and dread tams. I had to learn because I couldn't find hats big enough for my hubby and I. I am waiting for the supplies to start making glass beads, so I will be able to make dread beads and other dread jewelry. I'm also working on some dread care products: shampoo bars and herbal tea soaks. Just waiting on delivery of some ingerdients. I'll try to get some pics up of my hats & tams. niice. i wonder how long it takes to learn how to blow glass. not the elaborate stuff (like multi-chambered bongs ha-ha) just the beads. it would be cool to make your own glass beads
what a great idea... i have a ton of acrylic paints and love painting!! i definitely need to make some clay beads
get sculpy polymer clay, these are available in a lot of different colors so there is really no need to paint them unless you're after a nice custom design. if you plan to handpaint the beads, i would suggest some kind of clear topcoat to protect the paint topcoats are available in gloss and flat finishes and mostly come in spray cans
i would like to paint my own designs onto the beads so that they are completely unique. i have some clear glossy acrylic topcoat that you just paint on as another layer, i think it will work nicely! thanks for the ideas :cheers2:
i usually make my own hats/beads. i got my boyfriend some air dry clay last xmas so we made some beads outa them : ) but if i fancy a break, www.chelsuba.co.uk is really brilliant, you should give her a look! edit: the page takes a minute to load.
niice. saw some nice beads where they stick some pretty cool stones like sapphires and rubies and such on it. they looked nice. would look especially good on female dreadies. check out the link for some ideas http://cornrows.co.uk/patterns/dressdreds02.html nice textured polymer beads with semi-precious stones on that pic
