    hey

For the past few months I've been looking for an engagement ring for my girlfriend Amy but I haven't been able to decide on what type of ring to get.

    Any advice??
    Thanks.

I think this is a great thing to do in buying a engagement ring. Who would know best is her family or her best friend. But if you really love her you should an idea what she really wants and It would be much sweeter if you choose the for her. Anyways good in buying the ring.

i don't know her taste, but i like something that looks kinda antique. silver. not too big. i think when you find the right one, you'll know. if you can picture her wearing it...

yea I have more or less an idea of what I would want the ring to look like. The only issue that I'm really having is the material of the ring. I've been reading up on platinum because I've heard some great things about it.
Has anyone ever gotten a platinum ring?

i'd love a platinum ring but its very expensive. its used as an engagement & wedding ring metal here in the uk but like i said its very expensive here, almost double or tripple the price of gold.

have alook at pladdium. almost half the engagement & wedding rings sold here in the uk are made of pladdium. it has all the qualitys of platinum, looks the same etc but is half the cost.

I have a platinum BAND. Just a 2mm plain band. And it cost $200USD... with a discount.

I happen to have metal allergies. LOTS of them. So for me, there was literally no other option if I was going to wear a ring. My original wedding set was a lovely 14K yellow gold, with a single diamond & 6 diamond "chips" offsetting it. (I believe it was .18 total carat) That cost no more than the platinum band, and was absolutely beautiful.

Now in just over a year, we will be taking the original chips from my wedding band, along with the solitaire diamond from my grandmother's wedding band (that I inherited) and having a jeweler design a completely new ring (very simple design) for our 15th anniversary. Even though we own all of the diamonds, that will cost us $850USD. Out of curiosity we asked, and were told that to do the exact same thing in gold would have cost $350USD.

Hopefully that will give you an idea of the difference in cost between gold & platinum. With that being said however, if there is ABSOLUTELY ANY chance that she could be allergic to metals... I'd save up & spring for the platinum. Having your wedding bands literally cut from your fingers because you've developed an allergy to them is positively heart-wrenching. And read up carefully on metals that people tell you are "hypoallergenic." Most of them have a slim, (10-15%) but very real percentage of people that ARE still allergic to them!

    Good luck, and congratulations!!!
    love,
    mom

Yea thats one of the great things I read about platinum. My girlfriend doesn't have any allergies to jewelry but she doesn't wear yellow gold so I wouldn't get that for her. The reason that I'm leaning more towards platinum is because it lasts longer than the other metals. And even though it is more expensive, I've been saving up for a while now so I'm prepared to make an investment.
