I had some pain when I lost my virginity -- however, before it happened there were several unsuccessful attempts (which also hurt), and these probably loosened things up a bit. This partner was also the biggest of any I've since been with -- so I'm not sure how much of the pain was inevitable and how much of it was due to his size. All in all, nothing unbearable in my experience.
