i've never dyed my locks before, but i did about a week ago. using regular hair dye. i was gonna go with henna, but it fades away, and i wanted permanent.

anyways, so i used 2 boxes, and it looked great. 3 days later, looked not so great. just... not very colored. now a week later, it looks even worse. it's only pretty much at my roots that it still looks colored.

my question is, did the dreads just suck all the dye to the middle so the outsides of the dreads didn't really get dyed very well? or what's the deal? i can't figure out what the hell is going on. my dreads are doing just great, but the dye is... well, gone. where did it go?

anyone who'se dyed their dreads before wanna offer any suggestions?

never dyed mine so cant really sau except to say that it takes a long time just to get mine good n soaked in the shower (or even pool for that matter) im guessing the trucxk to dting em would be use way more then u expected 4 boxes maybe and soak wem squeezing em till the dte is pretty much sqyeezed through em, leavew it on lil extrea time even then rince like crazy tryin to squeeze it out again
i think if u basicly coat the surface yea alot will disperse somewhat inside the deread without really dring it inside ot out dut sorta just dispersing ..fading imn the process (but still just penetratintg just the outter layers)
i think if itstotaly saturated and squeezed throughout every bit of it it should take alot better

but like i said u dunno never tried it im just basing it on my obdservations of how liquids like wayer are not easy to get through the dreads thouroughly

true true. i've noticed that when my dreads get damp, they tend to pull the moisture into the middle of the dread. so i'm guessing they did that with the dye, and now all the colored hair is on the inside of the dread, while the outside still looks like crap.

the color isn't as bright as i wanted anyways. i'll just do it again, this time with 4 boxes or so. :)

i have no idea. i have dyed mine many times and the paint stays. of course it fades away more and more with every other washing, but i have to wait for months until there is no sign of paint at all

Hey! It's down to one or both of the following:

Your hair is very pourous and as a result the dye has just disappeared. It remains on your roots because this is new hair and hasn't been dyed yet and isnt pourous. Do you dye your hair often? If not. I think the Henna dye may have caused your hair to become pourous.

What also could have happened is that the henna hasnt totally come out of your hair causing a film over your dreads so when you dye it although it looks great for a few days it will come out fast. Don't dye your hair for a month now just to make sure all the henna is out then try dyeing again.

capillary action probably pulled the dye into the dread. but thats just my theory 8) maybe try using a darker/stronger color

nothing against dying hair but I just couldn't do it out of fear of the nasty chemicals ruining my hair, then the new natural growth is always a different color. good luck though i just hope you don't damage your hair.

Depends on the dye you use as well. The first time I did mine, the stuff I bought just wasnt' up to the task and I had to do a second dying with the stuff I knew would work.

And like Hello said, if you've henna'd in the last few months, it will make your dye fade quicker.

I've never had henna fade on me past the brightness toning down after the first week and nothing else gives me that henna shine so now I'm back to that. Though I'm gonna have to lift the colour on my roots in a few months. (I do seem to be getting some great Romy and Michelle comments "OMG you're hair looks great with the dark roots!!)

For those paranoid about henna gunking up dreads: Use the finest sifted henna you can get and mix it with liquid Certo! It makes really easy to smooth on and helps prevent the henna from drying as it sits.

i dont believe she has used the henna...but it will affect chemical process afterward.

i personally think henna would be a better choice for you...it does fade a little yes, and you have to do it every 4-6 weeks, but its a fairly easy process and does not wreck your hair like the chemicals do...in fact i highly advise you not to dye your hair again so soon because your dreads will become very weak. or use a semi permanent dye. since you dont tend to use conditioners, you cant replace what the chemical damage has done to your hair. besides in permanent dyes, its recommended that you touch up every 6 weeks, just like henna. but you can do henna more often, like every 2 weeks, and keep the color bright.

and not that im trying to toot my on horn, but i am in cosmetology school, so i am learning all of the specifics of hair care.

    thanks guys for the info.

first off, i haven't ever used henna on my hair, i was just considering it, but went with conventional hair dye because of price and i've used conventional hair dye before.

now. i only used 2 boxes, which makes me think it's probably a matter of i didn't have enough dye. my hair has never had problems taking to dye before. the ends have been dyed before, but it's been over a year. (i last dyed before starting the dreads). the rest of it hasn't been dyed ever.

my hair is pretty healthy, and i use a shampoo that has some conditioning agents in it (natural oils, etc), so my hair isn't dry and brittle. well, some parts are, but that was my own stupidity.

my dreads actually felt MORE conditioned a day or so after dying them. the color just isn't as bright as i was expecting, i think partly because i didn't use enough, partly because it's just not a bright enough color, and i used the cheapest dye they had.

i'm going to get some more and try again. and use 3-4 boxes this time.

i know even perm. hair dye *should* be touched up every 6 weeks... but i figure i'm gonna have to dye my roots ever couple months, i'll just do that, and spread the remainder over the rest of my hair to touch it up. i think that'll work quite well actually. and if they start to get too dry, i'll just use some conditioner on them (it'll only be the ends, i'm thinking).

maybe your expectations for your dye's color intensity was too high, just a thought 8)

Thought you had used it. 3-4 boxes is the right way to go. That's what I did. To be honest don't be disheartened if it doesnt stick. You will need to dye it once a month for three months before it starts to stick. That's what happens when I dye my dreads and I've been dying them since 2005 (not including the break from dreads I had).

did you dye it a burgundy color? along time ago before i had dreads i tried dying mine that color a couple of times, with permanent dye, and it faded out within a week or so too.

i'm thinking it was the brand. i used the cheapest stuff they had, cause i'm so damned broke, lol. when i had "normal" hair and was dying it regularly, it was the same one, and it faded a LOT. i know reds tend to fade a bit more than others, but this was rediculous. nearly gone in 1 week!

so i bought a slightly more expensive/higher quality one, and i got 3 boxes. we're gonna try this again, folks. :) i'm gonna wait a few days though.

the other thing i wonder is, it had been about 5 days since i last washed my hair. i'm thinking this might have caused part of the problem, since the next time i washed, i probably washed most of the color right out, cause it was probably sitting on top of the layer of oils/whatever builds up in your hair when it's not clean.

i'm going to wash it the day before i dye this time.

i'll let you guys know how it works out! :)

im a hobbyist and i build scale models. 1 rule in scale modelling is to wash with soap and water before painting the pieces cuz the oils from your fingers or wherever plus the dust will prevent the pigments from adhering to the surface

yup. i'm thinking this is a big part of it.

SO. i washed tonight. manana i'm dying again. and i might put some of the conditioning color lock stuff on too, just a bit, on the ends, where things are more dry, so i don't have my locks break off.

    wish me luck!
