I fucking love darkpsy. Kindzadza, Zik Matutero, Highko.... Love it. I've been looking into some South African Psytrance too at the moment. Frozen Ghost and Artifakt are really blowing my mind right now. Listening to all variations of Psytrance has really made me want to get back into DJing again.
The only thing that sort of turns me off from this genre is that each and every song seems to have the same underlying beat to it. Don't get me wrong this is pretty sick, but I couldn't listen to it all the time every day, I feel like it would get old.
there are MANY sub genres and variations of electronically produced psychedelic music. neodude i think you should check out some full-on and progressive psytrance like space buddha, toast3d, phatmatix, and so on.. edit; this thread is aimed at DARK psytrance, which does have that same underlying bass feel to it with most tunes.
hmm I found some space buddha, called storm reaction, pretty cool. I dunno the thing about psytrance is I feel like I should be in a club in order to listen to it or something lol.
you have to hear it in nature on a high dose of LSD the constant repetition will make sense..it's hard to explain...
especially if you're hopping and dancing and grooving and flowing and twirling and loving and laughing to the beat
jesus, god - it's so much more than just the beat. the beat sets the, hmm, tone? it's the OVERtonez that get your brain working and allow your mind to pick up on polyrhythmic textures and the sheer intellectual work that went in to making it. if you understand it, you can unwind and go on journeys with it; pick up on rhythms and create visions; like piecing together a jigsaw - and while tripping, every note and sound effect used in the technicality of psytrance production takes on a shape or colour or form (during synthesia) and retains that form each time it's heard; unless you've experienced it, you can only imagine the picture your mind will paint, and the vibrations your body will feel..
onto this - i don't know what album it's off, it sounds very much like the material on 'funked up'... so i take it it's recent. Electrypnose - 'Raising Monsters' http://www.imeem.com/people/S2jYXrf/music/LaCvGkX8/raising_monsters/
i jus started gettn into psytrance lately and i freakin love it! ive been into house and breakbeat for awhile and trance and techno in itself is a drug to me. it brings back every great part of a roll and trip(besides trippin lol) it gets me high somehow and i love it! this darkpsy is blowin my mind absolutely amazing! a lot of my friends jus cant grasp how great electronic beats really are they think im a brain dead raver for listenin to it, they jus dont understand the complexity to a truly great trance song and its kinda annoying.
there's a quite a few fans of the audio trip food that is dark psy in here... watch the Ambient & Trance forum during the following forever for threads on recommended albums and V/A collaborations
Procs - The Lonely Land of Tada. Nuff said. I'll sum up what I think of most dark psy, 4/4 kick, one note bass, and weird random sounds in between. No melody, all rhythmic. Most of it's formulaic and boring, but that goes for most psy. Thats not to say I don't like it, I'm just very judgmental of psy because I dedicate so much of myself to it and so much of it is just the same shit over and over again. Anyways, I love Alien Mental, Durango, Ka-Sol, Terranoise, Gorump Peyya, I love the South Afrikan sound, Frozen Ghost, Artifakt, Hiyarant and Dirty Motion are all awesome. Procs new album is one of the few darker psytrance releases I've heard that actually has melody, it's very different. The compilations Pandoras Box and Yggdrasounds are great too, both from this year.
It's not all one note bass, obviously you've yet to stumble upon V/A - 'Don't Take It Personal'... Music to get the mind ticking and the body pulsing. Boring is the last word you'd choose to describe it.
I didn't say all, I said most, which still stands. Shit, a great majority of ALL psy is one note bass lines.
Whats your point mate? I didn't say all psytrance contained one note bass lines, ever, so I don't understand what you're trying to argue about here.
Well, quite simply - the majority of 'ALL' PsyTrance is NOT simply one note bass lines.. most dark stuff is, but as mentioned above, the majority of full-on psy contains a lot of variation in bass line melodies.
I heard ambient music on this obscure radio station late one night and I came on here and found out about psybient. Just wondering about these genres that are new to me.
Well it's going a bit off-topic.. This be a 'dark psytrance' thread The Wikipedia (a bad reference, I know) definition is as follows.. 'Psybient, also known as "Ambient Psy", "Psychedelic Ambient", "Ambient Goa", "Ambient Psytrance" and more commonly within the Goa/psytrance scene as "Psychill" & "Psydub", is a genre of electronic music that combines elements of psychedelic trance, ambient, world music, new age and even ethereal wave. It often has many dub influences and can also sound somewhat like glitch. Psybient pieces are often structured around the concept of creating a "sonic voyage" or "musical journey". Although similar to psytrance's emphasis on maintaining non-stop rhythm throughout the night, psybient is far more focused on creating a vast soundscape that can be experienced over the length of an album, focusing less on beatmatching and allowing for a myriad of tempo changes. Psybient artists include Shpongle, Entheogenic, Bluetech, Shulman, Kick Bong, Pitch Black and Younger Brother.' Now, I love Bluetech music with a passion, but always had Evan down as IDM (intelligent dance music)/down tempo - although Psybient is a suitable name for his style. Then again, that's Wikipedia for you - unreliable as hell user submitted 'information' that can't really be trusted. I mean, Shpongle have all kinds of music and I definitely wouldn't class some of their stuff as 'Psybient'. Research round, compare your results, and create a psybient thread or post in a relevant topic. Psybient and DarkPsy are two completely different kettles of fish.
