I don't think anybody is ignoring it, I just think it's weird how people latch on to only half of his genetic heritage.

Then again, I'm a scientist nerd-type who tends to not understand popular culture very well.

The first time i read this, there wasnt anything about aspergers in it. I actually remember reading it and thinking, "aspergers.." because we had an assembly on it today.

So the gist here is that it is based more on appearance than actual genetics? I guess that makes sense in that it's a convenient label.

No but we have several people with aspergers in our school and our year is generally known as being douches.

"African American" is a completely idiotic term and I refuse to use it. I'd rather say "******" than "African American"... still more historically contextual.

Obama is somewhat of a real African American though, which is funny.

 

It's cute how threatened white people feel when descendants of slaves refuse to ignore their historical and cultural background.

Obama is not African American at all. He's actually an American African.

And here's a staunch supporter of Israel - to which jews have much less and/or more distant historical claim than black americans have toward Africa.

 

This is my understanding as well, which is why I have so much trouble understanding the need to label.

It seems like putting a label creates an artificial construct that simplifies the person into a category that they don't necessarily properly fit into. So in the case of Obama, calling him black (or African American) is taking half of what he is, labeling it, and ignoring the rest that people are uncomfortable with.
