    Hi everyone,

Im about to start my dreadlock journey, just had some questions i was hoping some of you guys could answer before begin.

My hair is about mid back length right now, and curly.
I havent used any products on it in the last 6 months, just water washing and finger detangling (it wants to dread tho! lol)
Im going to do it via neglect method.
Would it be reccomended that i do any sort of deep clense? There is no resisdue from shampoo or conditioner in my hair becasue well i dont use any.

Is there a preffered kind of Dr B to use, or will any of them do?

I train as an acrobat and so i shower daily, will it be ok to get dreads wet daily without shampooing them and it not causing any problems?

Also on this note- I tie my hair back in a pony tail or top knot when training- will this hinder the knotting process? Is there a better way to tie it back to help knotting?

Since im living in Australia right now, and right next to beach, would dunking my head in the sea be a good idea?

Im just also looking for any additional hints and tips people have discovered in their own journeys, essentail oils or other things that help, or any little simple hints and tips would be very much appreciated.

    Many thanks

The salt water will definitely help your hair knot up. I have read that its okay to wash your hair when you feel like you need it. But I mean if your are always washing it its gotta have some effect. Not sure about your other questuons, but bronners Tea Tree bar soap is the best

Read the sticky threads at the top of the Dreadlock forums. Read every post on every page, and you will find most of the answers you need. Getting good dreads is a journey, and the path is different for everyone. Variables include different skin types, hair types, hair length, and so much more. You'll need to read a lot before you have "your" answers.

Post some 'before' pics so that you'vee have something to compare to once you take your 'after' pics.

    peace :)

I wash my hair every other day and have been experimenting with differnet shampoos. Finally...I have found that Dr. B bar soap works best for my hair type. The liquid version didnt work too well...maybe I wasnt diluting it well or something...I dunno. Ive read on here before that there are people who wash everyday and there hair is fine....but again....as mentioned above...everybodys hair is different. You can start off washing everyday and if you see that knots are not sticking maybe extend it to every other day and so forth. Salt water will definietly help! If the ocean is too cold you can even make your own sea salt water concoction at home and use that. I use that about once or twice a month. I might be moving closer to the beach next summer....I plan on dunking my head every day!!!!!! Yipee! Anywho....you cant really mess up dreads. As long as you stay away from wax and chemicals....you'll be fine. Feel free to experiment with shampoos and oils. Just use everything in moderation and have patience! Good Luck!

    congrats on beginn9ing your journey

    ok to answer your questions
if youve been ok washing with just water then why not continue that
but if u feel dirty then use the deep cleanse ort dr b
getting em wet daily is no prob just when they lock up u may wanna make sure u get em dry in betweeen
tying em up wont hurt as long as u arent undoing knots when uy do..or as long as u domnt leave it tied so long that it becomes 1 dread..tying em wull encourage dreads to combiune when theyre not well formed so just be aware u may hafta seperate em lil more ofty4en
the ocean will help a ton
and i bet ya lock up fairly fast
    post pics semi often

getting them wet everyday is fine. after a while you suspect there is a problem just post with some pics. sometimes people think they are having a problem when nothing strange is actually happening.

sea water is great. the closest water i have to me though is from the great lakes and my city's own lake so i've only had experience with freshwater mixed with sea salt.

any dr. bronners should be fine. the liquid tea tree type is supposed to be great for your scalp if you've had prior scalp problems or are worried about them.

tying your hair back will hinder the knotting process, but that is only for the time its being restricted. since you only wear it during training you should be fine. i wouldn't tie it for the majority of the day though. hair needs to move around to knot. if its being held in place all the time, it can't move around and knot. it wouldn't damage your locks, just slow the process.

ever think of wearing a wool hat or would that fly off? mine spins off if i shake my head, but ive seen some pretty tight hats that would surely stay on. just an idea you might want to investigate. lets hope you have a great journey.

Thanks for the replys and advice everyone.
After dunking in the ocean, which i did today after training- felt great!, is it best to rinse with pure water afterwards? Or just leave the salt water in there?

Thanks again- Ill get some pics up, i have some from a few months ago and ill take some in the next few days too!

i usually wash the salt out after a little while (like 5-15 minutes). i've read it can make your hair very dry if you leave it in too long.
