I voted today. Took a vacation day from work on the premise that most people will be at work and the lines shouldn't be so long. It was a strategy that paid off and I was in and out in 30 minutes.

For the past two weeks here in Florida during early voting were reports of unbelievably long lines at the polls, people waiting from two to four hours in line.

Here on Miami Beach, I checked periodically and each time the line was a block or more long, even before 4 pm when most people were at work. Last Saturday I checked my precinct and the line actually went around the block almost back to the door where it started. So this morning I went with umbrella and a notebook to write a short story or something, anticipating a very long wait and was pleasantly surprised to see the line about six deep outside the door.

Last night all the broadcast TV channels were dominated with pre-election bantering. Tonight it will be completely dedicated to election results and more useless bantering. It ain't over 'til it's over - so why talk about it all night. Worse than watching hurricane "news" for days on end.

So, last night I saw a DVD of DEJAVU, tonight it is TRANSFORMERS. More of my election strategy to get thru this useless banter.

Tomorrow, hopefully all will return to normal, except for the normal incompetence that has ruled the presidency for the past 8 years. Also, hope it returns to the normal backward homophobia here in Florida and not have an additional mean-spirited Amendment 2 added to our constitution that would give more grief to those who love and live with partners of their own gender.

Don't know if I should check the 11 p.m. news tonight or not. It may or may not disturb my sleep - maybe best to find out tomorrow.

Just a note: I have a passport. If I find out tomorrow that Sarah Palin has become a heartbeat away from being President of the United States, I may go somewhere.

one thing that amused me today

i keep reading in the press about how urban areas [mostly democratic-leaning] have very few polling places, with very long lines

i live in a very poor, very small, mostly republican town

two open and empty polling places within 3 blocks of my house

    coincidence or conspiracy?

Me too, I got my bags packed just in case. I'll be going to Canada for starters. I voted earlier for Obama and it felt good.

Well, I live in the heart of Pittsburgh, and there are voting places all over. I've counted 6 within a 10 minute walking distance.

there are more people living within a 10 minute walking distance where you are than there are within a 1-hour driving distance [in all directions added together] where i am

this county has around 10,000 people living in it, with 12 polling places

    wtf?
