I think it is interesting, your DXM addiction. I have never really known anyone in real life besides myself that has ever been addicted. I was never really as much as addicted to DXM as I was addicted to just being High in general. I totally have empathy for you. There was a span of about 4 years that I pretty much drank cough syrup everyday, I drank alot when I was in the military, lots of large bottles, throwing up, making art and fighting. I hated that part and after I got out back to civilian life I would buy about 4 to 8 oz at a time on sale at wal mart at the everyday low price of 1.78. The last time was about 94 or 95 that I did it. What finally made me stop it was I got some pains around my liver area, then whenever I would even think about doing it, I would get those pains in my liver. Never drank it since. The best way to stop addiction is to put it away from your mind. If a thought comes to mind, you put it away and think about something else. Never continue to think about samething continually, the root of desire will take over.. But I am glad that it has never affected me physically. I hike almost everyday and have lots of energy. But I GUARANTEE you, it has enough bad effects on your body to ruin your internal organs. and that is what I think and feel. Oh yeah, the name of the band is A.M.Y. (Americas Misguided Youth)
This thread is ridicules, Let me help you a little bit here. Your NOT addicted to cold medicine. You just WONT STOP doing it. Did that clear anything up for you?
thats the truth, its in your head peoples. just stop buying/stealing whatever you do to get your cough syrup and or pills. i know its fun to try, but addicted to this? what the hell is wrong with you.
Addiction in my opinon is a obsessive compulsive thing or a disease from a result of a chemical imbalance or emotional pain
And your basing that on what exactly? What you think it should mean? So in your opinion you will before ever "addicted" to cough syrup even if you live to be 100 and never drink another bottle? Are you saying you are missing a chemical in your brain that can only be found by drinking cough syrup? If so whats your proof? Are you saying that you feel a "compulsion" to obsessively chug bottle after bottle of Robitussin or eat handfuls of cough pills? Or are you saying that you feel guilty about drinking gross cough medicine to get high and that you can't find an excuse to put your body through the sick practice anymore. Look kid, just stop drinking it.
They shouldnt have to. If its really an addiction then its YOUR addiction. And if you want to end it, its your job not theirs.
but it isn't a matter of opinion at all. "chemical imbalance" is a phrase most people don't understand but throw around left and right to explain away problems anymore. like ADD, which has little to nothing to do with your neurochemistry, and which ADD medications don't treat for anyway. a physical addiction has to do with your body becoming accustomed to certain substances being regularly introduced. in many cases they become so accustomed to it that they require a certain level of the substance for even basic, normal functioning. this is the case with alcohol and barbiturates, for instance. psychological dependance is the mentality that you need something to get by, without any physical need for the substance to maintain normal functioning. this is true of, say, marijuana, which can be stopped cold turkey without any physical withdrawl symptons or malfunctioning of the body. DXM, as far as i am aware, does not cause a physical addiction, but a mental one, however i may be mistaken on this point. if it does cause a physical dependance, then it is not among the most dangerous out there even if it is unpleasant to quit. remember alcohol and barbiturates...withdrawl from those may be fatal if not handled properly. this is not the case with DXM. my -guess- (not an opinion) is that DXM is only a psychological addiction. in either case, it is first and foremost a BEHAVIORAL issue which is causing the problem. not some imbalance or emotional pain. an unusual neurochemistry or emotional pain may be SYMPTOMS which are CAUSED by abusing substances, but they are not the addiction themselves, and without the behavior these would not be present. you need to just quit using this drug, and thats all there is to it. symptoms of addiction are not addiction themselves, neither are they causes for addiction. now i'm not questioning your addiction or suggesting its a snap to just quit using a drug you've grown quite dependant on, but the fact of the matter is addiction is not a disease, it is not a pathology. it is a mindstate and a behavioral issue, and it is correctable - WITHOUT drugs. its just up to you to do it, and you can't expect ANY program to give you all the answers and do the work for you. neither can you blame your problems on ANYTHING except your own choices and patterns of behavior.
I see where you are comimg from . Some believe addicrion is a disease and some believe it is a weakness, But emotional pain, bordom, wanting to get in touch with a deeper side of myself ,and wanting to have funi is the reason I do it, though I will try to stop, and working on it one day at a time or even one moment at a time
so you don't actually want to stop, right? you really just want attention? if you wanted to stop you would make an effort instead of not participating in rehab and then blaming them for not magically fixing you.
If it makes you happy why would you stop and why would you consider it an addiction? Now if the health risk's involved make you feel guilty I completely understand and agree. I wouldn't recommend you do it but it's your life. Don't let someone on the internet of all places tell you how to live your life, but if your asking for help about addiction my advice would be: "Stop being over dramatic."
