well I read the transcript and it seemed the humour was involved in making a grandparent unhappy by bringing the actions of his grand daughter . well people find different things funny calling people racist names mocking people for being fat while they walk down the road , Id say were simular . its the sort of humour intended to cause hurt , now I supported mohammed cartoons which could well cause muslims hurt but I still dislike ross and brand dont find them funny and would enjoy chasing them down the street with a thorny beating stick .
You have to admit, you have a lot in common with mujihadin wanting to behead those who insult Islam. If there's one thing we can take from this, it's that people find different things funny....
What one says to journalists or even ones friends isn't necessarily what one is to be fair. Now i wouldn't expect middle england to have any awareness of this, but their response might well be two wrongs don't make a right, others choice to misbehave shouldn't absolve oneself of reasonable action. I reckon he got caught in the stand up and protect ones grandchildren mode, and yes Fwalty Twoers is rascist, I've always thought it so but its alright as long as one says its comedy. One can actualy say whatever you like it appears to me, you'll always find someone to back up ones laugh.
yup the mujihadin and I are simular in some ways , I think if you draw cartoons and you know people are going to be so riled they will want to kill you when they do you should not be so suprised. Id draw cartoons but Id be happy to take the risk , these fellows should do likewise if they wish to indulge in this sort of humour so to if you do this sort of humour thats directed to hurt someone , like if you mock fat people in the street if the fat person comes across and knocks you out and then jumps up and down on you ,you well you shouldnt be to suprised by that see if I was andrew sacks Id take someone phoning me up to mock me while as good as saying my grand daughters a hussie as a personal insult . she may well be following her hussie ways all about town , and I may be unhappy about it but to have two impish fellows phone me up about it for a laugh Id feel Id have to do something about it as a matter of honour .
I disagree that it was "intended to cause hurt". It couldn't be clearer from what they said that it was jovial banter, light hearted humour, directed at a comic actor, a public figure who I'm sure they thought would see the funny side. If he didn't understand the humourous and ironic intention of the calls that's very unfortunate for him, but it's hardly the fault of Brand and Ross or the producers of the show, all of whom thought it was perfectly fine, the sort of thing people joke about all the time. We should not have to limit our expression, particularly our ability to do such things in public and for a wide audience, based on the fear we may offend some people who misunderstand humourous intent. The analogy between this and the Mohammed cartoons is not a bad one: we should not limit our freedoms on the basis we may offend...
Basically theyre a couple of prats. I cant stand either of them, talentless overpaid wretches But not because of what they said here. I didnt find it funny but it wasnt majorly offensive, and if Sachs aint bothered then whats the deal. Its not worthy of all this publicity. Theyre pillocks, but Ive always known, so
I think it is a bad analogy because, where I agree with your analysis of Sachsgate, the cartoons were not aimed in the spirit of fun but were a deliberate attempt by a right-wing paper to hurt a vulnerable minority and were reproduced across Europe by right-wing media and organisations with the explicit aim to target Muslims and stir up resentment. Whilst I have always said they should not be banned from print, I have still argued, from an ideologically oppositional standpoint, against papers choosing to print them. The cartoons bring in a whole element of politics and social relations which are entirely absent from Woss and Bwand....
Not really the thread for it, but I'd say their intention was to satirise a religion, not to hurt a minority... Also I think it's a mischaracterisation to call Jyllands Posten a "right wing paper", I believe it would be comparable to, for instance, the Telegraph, ie a fairly middle of the road conservative broadsheet.
It's possible you could argue the original printing was intended to satirise religion, although it was still specifically targeted at Islam. The paper's refusal to print derogatory cartoons of Jesus on a previous occasion is evidence that they were never interested in broad satire, rather a target, and an easy one in Western society. That aside, the re-printing of the cartoons across Europe at the height of the controversy was, by and large, a deliberate attack on a minority with the full knowledge of the effect it would have and indeed was having. Many of the papers that ran the cartoons were far from middle of the road. The only national organisation to use the cartoons in their media in Britain, to my knowledge, were the BNP....
