I've decided I want to do it. Just for the fun of extending the Halloween season. I've been looking up stuff like crazy and finding that there is so much diversity in how it is celebrated... Just got the stuff to make pan de muerte and candy skulls for a party on Saturday night. Should be fun. Does this make me a poser? If so, am I posing as a Mexican? Just wondering.
Not really celebrating yet, but I certainly hope it’s better than the original effort put forth by George Romero https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KvT-ZgZjS0 Hotwater
My city actually does a Dia de las Muertes celebration at the museum. They have sugar skulls, ofrendas (altars to the dead), face painting, etc. We might go, unless it's raining. We're not Mexican, except my grandson, who is half. Everybody, of all races and nationalities goes here.
Ive never heard of it being celebrated anywhere here. We did skulls and that in art in year 9 though all about it which was interesting. So I'd say go for it. And who cares if you're a poser? I doubt anyone'll stop you celebrating.
I'm considering making an ofrenda this year actually for Kaylin, but I hate those candy skulls and don't have the patience to make pan de muerto, lol. I celebrated Dia de Los Muertos every year in high school, though, and that was fun.
I'm gonna go home and give everyone the green light to eat the cookies on the altar today. They've been drooling over them for two days, lol. I had skulls all over it and peppermint and thyme (mostly to keep the cats away from the food). I had a bowl of water with floating tea lights and each candle represented someone whos name was written on the bottom of the tealight. I left out cookies, a piece of pan de muerte, a chalice of water, and a little dish of catfood (in memory of my two cats Xoti and Cookie). There was also a collar (Xoti's) a sprig from the bush Cookie used to sleep under, and a little witch my Grandmother gave me when she was alive. My boyfriend lit a candle for his kitty Skrufflez. He was afraid to at first because he "didn't want to bother him," but I reassured him he would be happy to be remembered. We had a party Saturday night and watched the Nightmare Before Christmas.
