since the door setup our house has is not convenient at all for letting eleanor in and out, i am looking into building a kitty door in the small room near our backdoor... but the door does not look like it wants me to put a whole in it from the stuff it is made out of, would a drill shatter or mess my door, do i need a new door, or any other ideas??? second question is if you notice where my gerbil cage is, its very convenient for her to sit on, get to my bed on, jump from my bed onto it, and the gerbils *hate* that, she doesnt seem to realize that she is waking them up and scaring the fuck out of them in the process, and i dunt like that, but i guess i cant stop that, or maybe i can...but the main concern i had is her breaking into the cage as she could probably very easily do that with her claws and the mesh top, so what i was thinking was to put a layer of wood underneath the cage, but then that would spoil the magnificent view they have of me coming in and out of my room, lol... so i am trying to think of ways to keep their jailbar view instead of a solid break wall, but at the same time keep the top sturdy enough to not break when eleanor jumps on it or trys to claw through it, so suggestions are definatley welcome... sorry this was so long, any help is greatly appreciated

    Hi Fractual!

Really CUTE kitten you have there. But a cat is a predator and gerbils are prey... could you possibly design a 'clip lock' for the gerbils cage? I think that those kinds of locks are available ... maybe in stores that sell snakes of the poisonous variety.

Hmmmmmmm... your door is aluminum. Does the bottom panel come out in any way? If you could remove that bottom panel and replace it with 1/4" or 1/2" outdoor plywood, you could install your cat door in the wood.

Your door won't shatter, but aluminum is a tough cut. If you decide to go with the aluminum panel... start a hole with a metal drill bit(for the saw blade to fit into at the edge of the line you'll have marked out for the cat door placement). If you have, or can borrow a Skill Saw (jig saw)... use a metal cutting blade to cut out the correct sized hole for your cat door. Self threading metal screws could be used to attach the cat door to the aluminum door panel... before you attach the cat door to the main door seal it first with a sealing glue, such as Gorilla Glue or even window caulking.

    Remember... "Measure twice... Cut once"
