I recently found a pretty cool article on how the outcomes of the 2008 elections will affect anarchist strategy and organizing. You can check out the whole thing here: http://anarchiststrategy.blogspot.com/2008/10/elephant-in-room.html The main point however is that if McCain wins, anarchists will have to continue playing the defensive and focus on preserving communities that already exist. If Obama wins however, the article predicts that as a large amount of people inevitably become disillusioned with his false promises and realize that the government is not going to be able to do shit in the face of economic collapse, the Iraq war, and climate change, they will become open to more radical ideas. It is here that anarchists would be able to seize a big chance and contribute to these ideas, offering critiques of the system and new solutions from an anti-authoritarian standpoint, allowing us to increase our numbers and foster communities in places that would not have been possible in the past 8 years. I thought it was an interesting point. Any thoughts?
Im curious what solutions anarchists thought government would offer to things such as the economic crisis in the first place. I'm not particularly excited about either candidate winning, but I guess I have my fingers crossed (if that applies in this situation), for Obama.
I think the blog does have a point. When times get tough people become more open to radical ideas and revolution. However anarchy will have to compete with many other forms of politics like communism, fascism, and a number of other groups. And for most sheeple they like to have ideas laid out for them so they can do it and not have to think for themselves. Which the other groups have clear plans for how they are going to change the world with their own right and wrong and codes. Anarchy is far different in this respect because it tells people to think for themselves become autonomous and have true freedom. Most people nowadays don't want groups with no clear goal other than autonomy. people would need to start getting accustomed to such ideas before it could begin to catch on with the general populace. although with times getting rough it may start pushing people to think for themselves when governmental powers begin to break down from internal corruption and they have no one to look for except themselves for guidance. that would be the ideal condition where an anarchist society would grow and evolve from.
