Hey everyone. Just thought I'd make a thread for you guys too see my progress, as I've become very happy with it as of late! One of the best pieces of advice I got when I started was to 'stay patient and humble, and you'll have the dreads you're after', and I can recommend it to anyone. I started when it was like 3-4 inches long, just bought the shampoo from the dread shop, started washing with it, and towel rubbing, to start the locking process. After a while of just doing that I already had some full on locks, and went for a session to backcomb the rest. My locktician's products are packed with African Indigenous Herbs and other lovely smelling stuff that keep my hair nourished and smelling great. And yeah since then just been doing the odd palm rolling sessions, little wax every now and then (its a very natural wax, most of the ingredients are herbs and and oils, with a little beeswax and cocoa butter.) Its smells amazing, and doesn't build up, or make my hair look like candles. I've also got a "Natty Dread Oil" which is again, packed with Indigenous Herbs, as well as Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba oil, and Carrot oil, which keeps my scalp healthy and my dreads nourished. I trust her products as she is a qualified aromatherapist. She is also RastafarI, which explains her husband's and her waist/thigh length dreads; she's been doing this for years. You can have a look at their website @ www.indigenousdread.com - its a bit outdated but you get that idea So yeah thats me I thought it would be a good idea to join these forums to see wat other dreadies around the world are using to keep their dreads clean and healthy, incase I ever need to change my system. Your hair in the first couple of pictures looks how mine does now.. its only been acouple weeks the sides are locking up amazingly but not so much on the back an some on the top
I just let my hair go... then I had dreadlocks... then I ate mushrooms... then they lifted off of my head and moved around like snakes swimming in the sea... I felt like medusa... Fin.
great progress, lookin good. kinda skeptic about the wax though as you might expect, i just dont see 'why' ... except the herbal mixes and oils, theyre pretty obvious...but if you're sure it has no bad(ish) sideffects, great i wish you the best journey bro
im also very scepticle of the wax. the reason being, before i ever read that just from the pics waX WAS THE 1ST THING ON MY MIND, NO THEYRE NOT CAKED LIKE CANDLES BUT ITS VERY ODVIOS THERES A WAXY BUILDUP.. LOOK, THE 1ST CLUE TO STEer clear was ..shge runs a dreadlock salon..those 2 words should never be in the same sentence.. i give her creedit in her scam for at least trying to give the appearance of being all natural with the aromatherapy oils and herbs, and perhaps the opils and shampoos are great [roducts maybe the wax is even better then other waxes, but its still wax and wax has no business being in your hair read her sitre and yuou will see she says her products help with binding..in other wirds gluing.. there is no need to bind hair together..knotslock waxes bind.. binding prevents movement and locking do me afave..if your camera has a macro setting take a really closeup of a dread..
yeah, so hes used binding stuff, whats the big deal?! theyre not as waxy as mine were!! his dreadies are lookin good, id be well happy if mine had looked like that
since u asked..my natty story went to a gathering in vermont foubnd some awesome beads at trade circle had a beautiful naked gypsy goddess put em in my hair (only the back was long enough. had the rest cut short for school) hujng out in the mountains woth amazing peiople a few weeks went home and discovered i had dreads (maybe 6-8) as the rest grwew in i played with it alot i was working at 1 of tjose acyivists gtoups doing phone canvassing so i was bored and wouldjust twiddle with my hair absentmindedly while annoting ppl on the phone.. worked there 2 months at most and had dreads by the time i quite products i used..varius soaps methods i used.. patience maintainance.. just seperating em (and if bored i might pick at strapped fuzz but usualy dont bother)
I believe hair resembles strength in spirituality and mind. I have never brushed my hair in my life, and quit cutting it. extremely curly hair and loving use of natural products induced dreadlocks I guess.
My thread is going! (a bit ) Haha its no scam man trust me. And its not like a salon salon, its just a shop, the focus isn't actually the dreads thing. My gf has a digital camera I'll try get a close up pic soon. why, do you want to see if its locked or 'glued'? haha trust me they're locked! its 100% natural, I don't see how there could be anything bad about using it. it also says its biodegradable. I just use it for a bit of nourishment every now and then, when they get dryish. haha crazy story man. how do you hang out in the mountains for a few weeks? naked gypsy goddesses? :drool5: yea i threw my hairbrush away a long time ago now but cool, thanks guys for the cool responses, lets maybe keep it going if anyone has pics of their progress, like old pics that show your process/journey. its cool to see how peoples hair change over the months/years.
all the wax horror stories pretty much you've read about here (if you have) are natural beeswax and the like. it doesnt have to be synthetical to mess it up, its the simple fact that it hinders hair movement and tangling and builds up (wax says FU to water pretty much..and stays in, unless its really hot). the ingredient 'beeswax' is what's the main source of the problem in my opinion, as its the main shit in dreadwax usually, and often used by dread "makers" to seemingly fasten the process and thus secure their business for the people who are just out for the overnight dread fashion look. thats just a general ramble though, things arent that in your case...i personally dont notice any buildup i think, but i dont have much experience with that on the other hand. she seems to be someone who knows what she's doing when it comes to the herbs and natural products, but perhaps theres some things she's not taking to account when talkin bout real dreads, meaning the bit of beeswax. just to perhaps inform you, if you're totally convinced its all good if you question it once again for yourself, its all good. peace.
i seriously had NINE hairbrushes at one point.. between me and my three kids we could never seem to find one. i just recently found two hairbrushes after moving and finally unpacking everything. one hairbrush still has the paper wrapper thingy on it! i put them under the sink in the bathroom in case someone comes over and needs to borrow one.
yeah theres alotta wax horror stories out there and i dabbled with it lol very very briefly, i didn't like it. but i just wanted to shout a word of caution about things advertised as natural- companies know lots of people are concerned about health/environment/etc so they use this word natural to push their products, it's not always a good thing they are selling and it's evven not always a natural thing. and some natural things are natural but it doesn't mean they are good for you. shit is natural. crude oil is, methane is, poison oak is natural too. this isn't aimed at you who started the post i was just saying it outloud for all to hear hey man your hair looks great but i think it might look better with some deep cleaning and then letting it go with putting nothing in it, you could try it and if you didn't like you could go back to what you were doing. but i bet you'll like your hair even more! i put nothing in my hair and this is what i consider natural
yea every one here trys to keep it natural as possible you can have really nice dreads with out using wax. c look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W3SyZuT7DE hes one of my friends
Ahoy thanks for all the words of warning. yeah well I'm not gonna use it now for a while see how it goes. I never did use a lot though. I really love that dudes dreads ive seen that video before, and that song is ace too!
my natty story? i wanted to try dreads, cause i'd always thought they looked so awesome, and i just felt this stirring in my soul every time i thought about it. so a year and a few months ago, i was almost fed up with a job that felt really restricting to me, and i wanted to do something to help me learn patience, and also to be kind of an "f-you" to my uptight bosses. so i backcombed my hair into "dreads." my bosses actually didn't care, and i found a more relaxing job anyway, and i think my dreads really helped my lover and i to make the decision to leave behind some very tight, restricting situations/people and move out here to california. it has been a spiritual, growing experience so far, and i look forward to more wisdom, love and peace in my life as my dreads continue to grow!
