Are the lies of "Zeitgeist" being repeated in Bill Maher's new movie "Religulous"?

There was a thread here before about Zeitgeist, and after much ado I think there's a pretty clear consensus that the portions that deal with Christianity use references to 'research' that is *highly* suspect, and undeniably biased. Anyway, I haven't seen "Religulous" yet but from what I hear, it may be repeating, yet AGAIN, the same trash and touting it as fact. Does anyone know more about this?

Of course it offends a lot of christians. It pokes such obvious wholes in the bible and proves a lot.

I haven't seen it, but I've heard Mahr touting it on TV talk shows. Mahr is provocative, irreverant and (I think) often wrong in his opinions, and what I saw was definitely anti-religious propaganda. If you don't take him too seriously, he serves a function (kinda like FedUp American used to do.) Let's face it, there's plenty of toxic Christianity around that Mahr can use as target practice. But I don't think he understands real Christianity.

Well said. Personally I wouldn't watch Bill Maher if he were the only comedian in Hollywood.

Bill Maher is completely out of his element here, so I would take what he says in his new movie with a grain of salt. His understanding of religious belief and the Supermeaning behind it leaves him looking very pretentious.

So, if he uses those lies from Zeitgeist, does it really matter?

I saw an interview with him and some clips. I gotta say, a Christian would have to be seriously insecure to be offended. The film mocks the worst excesses of religion - any religion - and for someone to feel that their faith was being singled out would be frankly a tad arrogant.

One can have a sense of humour about the absurdities of their religion without feeling that the religion as a whole is being mocked, just as one can dislike certain aspects of a company they work for but still not feel obligated to quit.

He seems like something of a buffoon. He's not saying anything with this film that hasn't been said better, funnier, and with more potential for controversy, in about a hundred other films. He acts like he's saying something revolutionary, but even by American standards he's not. The Life Of Brian was 1979, for god's sake.

I am not American, so perhaps not as familiar with this film as others. However, I thought this film was a completely different type to Zeitegeist.

Zeitigeist was an embarassingly bad documentary. Where as this is simply mocking the excesses of belief right? Not specificically trying to prove them wrong as such.

    Am I right/wrong?

Well yeah, I think from what I saw, Religulous is just making fun of religion by stating the bleedin' obvious. Plenty of comedians from Christian backgrounds have been making the same jokes for decades, so they can hardly be presented as earth-shattering revelations of secret conspiracies.

But would it take God, or a real reverence in the concept of education NOT corresponding to work knowledge in Life, for mankind to reduce to the four day work week?

I don't think the film religuilous borrows any more from the conspiracy laden Zeitgeist as it does the works of Christopher Hitchens.

It was a decent flick in my opinion.

    I enjoyed it.

if taken lightly, it does make you realize the very stupid things religious extremists think, and how they managed to completely warp their religion to work for their own twisted view of what it's trying to teach them .

It gives us all a decent idea of how completely wacko many religious extremists are. !! bunch of nutcases!

I'm a Bill Maher fan and I really enjoyed Religulous. I'm young and don't know a lot and I don't pretend I do, but from what I do know, I liked it. It pointed out a lot of things, that I was thinking but never actually say about religion.

I'd like to see it, but somehow I doubt that it will ever show at a theater near me. Maybe I can rent it from Blockbusters.

Bill Maher's primary interest is making himself look smarter than others, with getting other people to agree with him coming in a close second... kinda like Michael Moore.

Films like this set out with a very predetermined and very politically motivated agenda and do not waver if they happen to uncover something that might actually make things seem as complex as they really are. They are designed to make things seem so glaringly obvious that you would feel like an idiot if you happened to disagree with them... and they are always very selective about the kinds of information they present.

These kinds of films are no better than propaganda... but luckily, nowadays most people are critical enough not to accept everything that they have to say as absolute truth.

I have zero interest in exposing myself to this drivel.
