So here's my deal. I used to have dreads in, about a year ago. I stupidly used wax in the beginning (I know better now) and after about 8 months, some had formed dreads but some had all locked together and a couple had fallen out entirely. In the end I got very frustrated and I went about the painful process of taking them out. Now, a couple months having been knot-free my hair is really showing the damage I did to it while I was trying to 'repair' and then take out my dreads. I would very much like to give it another shot, however, I'm wondering how long I should wait for my hair to repair itself? Or does it really matter? Also, another issue is that I'm currently attending college for theatre performance and looks are a bit of a 'thing' here, so I'm considering waiting until the summer to begin them anyways. I just would like to see any info you can toss my way that might be helpful.
It took my hair months to recover and rethicken after I took my dreads out. I had some serious thin spots in the back of my head for awhile and every time Id brush my hair clumps would fall out! It was bad. I waited a couple years to do it again. Doing it naturally lessens the damage. Also if you do it naturally, the progress will be subtle so it shouldnt matter if your into theater or not. Either way...good luck and have fun!
theaters a world of illysion wear a wig if u go natural theres no reason to wait i would not backcomb already severely weakkened and dammsaged hair uyyill it repairs itself
In my opinion 'looks' being a thing or trend is everywhere. While you grow your locks, you will gradually begin to see conforming to a norm or what 'looks good' is a completely ridiculous notion that is completely within your own mind. If you present yourself 100% true to who your are, tangles and knots in your hair won't make a difference. If we all waited until there a time that we could 'look bad' for a little bit, none of us would have dreadlocks. It's not about how you look, doing your hair, conforming to a trend, being 'hip', how you dress, or anything else. Starting your journey is about totally letting loose from all of these ideas to be the person you want to be completely. It's not about locks of hair but total self expression and not letting others or society define you. Don't let the general ideology of a group of people control your thoughts or actions especially when it comes down to something as mundane as brushing your hair. And when you look at in this perspective you will see that when you continue to style your hair to conform you are being untrue to yourself in a much deeper way. It's the people that are wrong for judging. If it's dreadlocks you want, then you should have them. I would stop brushing your hair now, as that is damaging itself. Naturally dreading your hair will be the most gentle thing your hair could receive aside from ripping the dreads apart. Just use Dr. Bronners or baking soda once a week. Then later rip apart.
by the way, from the pic in your sig you are a beautiful. Your dreads would only enhance all that natural beauty that is there. I hope to see pics 6 months from now with a seriously nappy head of hair.
