It makes complete sense that they would celebrate Thanksgiving one month earlier in Canada than they would here in the states (even as far north as Plymouth, Massachusetts) home of the Pilgrims. --------------------------------------------------- We didn’t land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us Hotwater
i think i might be a grandparent trapped in the body of a grandchild. to me, nothing is better than gathering together your loved ones and celebrating with the grandest feast you are able to get together, simply having a good time in the presence of loved ones. i couldnt care less about the history of the holiday. its exagerated myth, like the bulk of holidays i'm familiar with celebrating. but i love it more than any other holiday, because all it involves is simply getting together with loved ones and celebrating, eating good food, maybe a little drinking, just relaxing and enjoying each others' company. its a very social, intimate holiday. other holidays often piss me off. christmas is simply an adaptation of the old pagan holiday regarding the birth of mithras, a means to help pagans make the transition to christianity. its also the most disgustingly commercialized holiday i know of. new years eve can be good sometimes, but is generally just a party, getting drunk and/or high. not about being with who you love and being grateful for the blessings you have. easter is essentially just another pagan holiday modified to be about jesus, and also very commercialized. further, while the myths regarding st nick at least adhere to some christian sentiments and beliefs, the easter bunny is pure garbage and bullshit. perhaps its largely due to being raised in a christian family and knowing that most christian holidays are empty, largely devoid of actual spiritual signifgance in most cases, but i view thanksgiving as one of the most intimate and genuinely celebratory holidays i've been raised to observe. even if the legends and stories are largely bunk or worthless (celebrating the blessings of god and the help of the native people who helped the pilgrims survive, right before we killed and/or assimilated them and took all their land and their ways of life)
That last post made me forget what the thread was about! People say I sing ok, even though I've never taken lessons of any kind, so I guess it's that, and cooking.
americans are largely isolationists. there is not frequently discussion of other people and cultures except among those interested in such things. in (public) school, history classes teach almost only about political and military history when it comes to other nations. sometimes religion is brought into it (martin luther, CofE, spanish inquisition)...sometimes inventions/inventors are brought into the equation. but largely we aren't taught about holidays, customs, and other things of cultural significance from other countries. and when it comes to asia, you can bet your cute canadian ass that almost nothing is said (the fact that printing and a number of other inventions were developed first, independantly, by the chinese is not of any importance to most history teachers) and when it comes to the history of aviation...heh.....unless you take a class focusing on it, you'll hear a much different version of the story here than in many other countries. but no, schools don't teach about canadian thanksgiving, and in general theres no need for the media to talk about it, so unless you have canadian friends or relations or have been exposed to it in some other way, most americans are very ignorant of it. i'd be willing to guess at least 3/4 of americans couldnt tell you whether or not canadians celebrate thanksgiving. more of them would be unsure of whether or not the date matches our date. and still fewer could tell you the specific date. i'm unfamiliar with EXACTLY when it is myself, even though i know it exists and is celebrated earlier than in the US. i'm pretty sure its in october.
oh, I know all of that. I just think its stupid. Shouldnt you be a little more aware of your surroundings? All your shit is consistently in our face.
But thats just a personal annoyance, I know all of you are well educated. Sorry if this was offensive.
i can paint and make things, my most NATURAL talent, would be that i am a human confessional. ppl i dont even know will come up to me and tell me their secrets. i guess i have the "i can trust that person" kinda vibe
Yes, it's this Monday. The Election is on Tuesday. So all the left over turkeys that don't get eaten, will get elected. I am presently barefoot. Who knows, you might get lucky?
