With all due respect, I think stories like these are what people are using to keep in denial of the fact that we face a systemic problem.

That way we can pretend the whole spiel has to do with individual responsibility or the lack thereof. Taken a step further, we can say "Nothing is going to happen to me therefore, since I am a responsible individual."
