The only alt/country bands I know are, Wilco & Uncle Tupelo....

And I think 'My Morning Jacket'..... are they alt/country?

I think that Jimmie Dale Gilmore and The Flatlanders are concidered to be a couple of the main pioneers of the alt.country genre.

I can't say enough about the 1978 album "The Flatlanders" its been rereleased as "The Flatlanders, More A Legend Than A Band"

Pretty much anything by Jimmie Dale Gilmore is good too. Its a bit twangy and more country than someone new to the scene might like. Its good shit though!

I saw Hank Williams III in concert several years back... was amazing. Don't know if he is "alt country" as he has nothing in common, as far as I can hear, with Wilco, not that I don't enjoy Wilco. Maybe Hank III is more hardcore rockabilly? Meh... music labeling confuses the hell out of me!

i dunno what you consider alt country, but some of the stuff by Ryan Adams is pretty good, depending on which album you listen to

Whiskeytown (Ryan Adams band) they are sooo good, or I guess I should say they were good 'cuz they aren't together anymore.

    Built to Spill
    Ryan Adams
    Wilco
    Iron and Wine
    Uncle Tupelo
    Billy Bragg
Bright Eyes (some of his stuff)
    Jeff Tweedy
    Gillian Welch
Catpower (I think she sounds country)
    Neko Case (amazing girl singer!!)

Humm, I can't think of anymore right now. Basically alt. country is someone that sounds coutry but isn't played on country radio. Make your own judgement.

Anybody else heard the word Wilco did with Billy Bragg? Brilliant stuff. Billy isn't exactly a country singer by any stretch of the imagination (do the British even have country?) but it's a great match up.
