How does one go about a pilgrimage?

How would one begin planning, and preparing, to go on a spiritual pilgrimage?

I have a very specific place I feel I need to go, I however, haven't the first idea how to execute.

 

I would just get up and go. Learn about the process on the way. Isn't that essentially what a pilgrimage is?


Fill me in.

 

I need to get to petra before I die. the particulars aren't terribly important, except that at least the earliest parts of the journey (getting to another continent) is a bit tricky.

I understand most muslims make a similar pilgrimage to the place of mohammed's birth, so I can't imagine it'd be too impossible, just, difficult.

I'd say other than the financial burden, getting going on the whole journey is half the battle.

a lot of the financial aspect is what worries me, that and the time I will have to take out from my life to do it on the cheap. plus, I don't know how hard it is to get into jordan if you're white, american, and only speak english.....

 

Who says you have to go to Jordan for a pilgrimage. Can't you go somewhere else?

 

I have to go to petra, unfortunately it's not one of those alterable pilgimages....
