ok so this freshmen on my volleyball team's mom decided to take the liberty to make us these really stupid looking shirts. we didn't even KNOW we were getting such shirts, or she was making them, or what was going to be on them. the look really stupid, and when she came in the one day to give them to us she was like "oh and by the way they're $20 each". now, they're custom shirts, like they have our name and number so we can't just "return" them. they're really cheaply made too, there's 13 girls on the team and 13 by 20 is 260 and it definitely did NOT take $260 to make these shirts and it pisses me off that she's trying to make a profit, nevermind we never even asked for these! how would you respond? my dad flat out told me we aren't going to pay. it's a lot of money, money that most of my teammates can't afford to throw around for shirts we'll never wear. am i seeing this wrong? do people elsewhere usually do this? i just find it really really rude to give someone something they didn't ask for and then be like oh by the way i'll be expecting money for it. help!
that's the weirdest thing I've ever heard. I don't even know what to say but that I certainly wouldn't be paying for one if it were my situation.
i know! it's like out of no where she gives us these shirts and asks for money. we were all like what the FUCK. and on top of that, she made me and my friend tell everyone about the money part. we were the first ones she gave them to and she was like "oh and i'll let you girls tell everyone about the money" i almosted laughed in her face because i thought she was kidding but, little did i know.... :/
give it back, tell her you didn't ask for it and don't want it. she should have asked who wanted shirts before she wasted the money. you are not obligated to pay for it if you don't want it.
^^^ Exactly, you aren't obligated to pay for these. I would compliment her on the fact that they are lovely and then apologize for not being able to afford one and give it back. I would be polite about it because, even if she did intend to make a profit, in her mind I'm sure she thought she was doing somethign great that everyone would be thrilled about. The older I get, the more I realize that what goes on in peoples' heads is very strange. No need to piss on the good intentions, but also no need to put yourself out for it. Cheers
thanks for the replies everyone ! i think i'm not going to do anything about it until she asks, then either tell her whats up (politely) or lie and say we can't afford it. i mean my family can afford it, but my dad got me a shirt (which he emailed everyone about getting) already and dropped money on that and i feel terrible asking him for another $20, but it's not me who i'm concerned about.
thats the most uptight and stupidest thing i've ever heard. tell that girl you don't want the damn shirt, and that you're not gonna pay for it
Ya, don't pay for it. I mean, it's great she put effort into it but that's low to charge $20 for a crappy looking handmade shirt that you never asked for. Just say thanks, and whatever you do don't pay her for it because that will give her an excuse to make you pay in the future. It was a pretty snobby move on her part, and as someone who designs and sells clothing on a daily basis I can tell you that even with high quality equipment (good shirts with antimicrobial lining and a screenprinting machine or an airbrush for the design) a well-done shirt is nowhere near $20. All in all, I'd say from the sounds of it she'll be profiting about $16 a shirt considering white shirts when bought in multipacks (which Im sure she did) come out to only a couple of dollars a piece and then she probably used a box of sharpies and some glitter paint/gel pens which amounts to a total of $4 a shirt or so.
Thats one fucked up situation! If it was me, I would probably just tell her that I didn't ask for the shirt.
yeah dont pay, just return it. you never know, the rest might see you as an example and return theirs. fuck paying for shit you dont want
You're not seeing it wrong. I wouldn't pay for something I do not like and never asked for in the first place.
Yeah... OR.... Turn the shirt into a pillowcase, shit on it and return it along with an expired coupon to Hometown Buffet in an envelope labeled "I created the feces here at great personal expense and therefore am unable to reimburse you at this time".
Like someone above said, those shirts costs no more than 8 bucks a peice , probably around 5 or 6. I mean you can buy a professional brand name shirt at a store for less than 20 dollars.
