I am in the same boat as you..I have been smoking weed on and off since I was 11 and I am 39 now..I still hike alot, work full time, good dad, I still like getting stoned..but usually after a few days of not smoking, I always start jonesing and doing the same thing you were doing, which is digging through my drawers or wherever and looking for stray buds..that is when I get the feeling, cause I know I am addicted and it sucks to be a slave to something..total loss of power..plus, the cost, remember that song from the beginning of Cheech and Chong- Up in smoke..

    Up in smoke
    thats where my money goes
In my lungs and sometimes up my nose
When troubled times begin to bother me

I take a toke and all my cares go up in smoke

plus, I am even stoned now..I bet if I was not stoned, I would be out hiking looking for caches right now, instead of sitting here typing...

Damn.....from the looks of it you guys seem to really give the herb a bad rap. At least according to what I've just read. It's only a "tool", and as we all know a tool is only as good or as bad as its user. Herb can be used for very positive purposes, however it is completely dependent on why and when you use it. I know this, because I've abused herb many a time in my day. Honestly one doesn't need ganja, I do realize that....spiritually it can help, but one must be VERY careful, because it can also act as a hindrance towards entering that spiritual world. It's relaxant qualities are beautiful as well, but personally I find it's ability to help tear down our every day biases to be its best.

It's not as though the herb takes away our ability to choose. You still have the choice to go outside and do things. I'd so much rather smoke outside and meditate or go on a hike than smoke inside. (doesn't go to say I won't smoke inside) I already feel a deep connection with nature (not just trees, plants etc...but the natural way of things-a Stoic approach) but herb intensifies that connection and allows me to see just what I am part of. Of course those are my personal views and mainly why I use the herb, why you use it is entirely up to you.

So, quit if you must....but realize that it's WHY you use it that determines whether or not you will be viewing its use as negative or positive in hindsight.

I'm a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. For me it was quit all or none, no in between. I've got over 22 years clean & sober using the 12 steps of AA.

If I had said back in my day I could see that being a bit "funny". But "my day" simply refers to my life....it's technically still "my day" so long as I am alive. Even if I had said back in my day still...it's wrong to judge someones statement strictly by age...I am 19 young perhaps...old perhaps regardless I've seen A LOT of shit.

If you so choose to put that much value on time than who am I to tell you otherwise.

I think if you want to quit you really do need to replace it with something. I don't mean you should use other drugs, but think about what the drug does. It influences your perceptions and feelings in a generically "good" way, circumventing the reward circuits that evolved to help us make good choices. At this stage in our development, (especially when drugs are known to be available) we need consciously direct our choices, understanding that we may be fooling ourselves. Search your soul for the deepest intentions you have for your life. When we live our dreams we feel rewarded, and even our subconscious knows it's genuine. Try to focus on fulfilling the grandest desires you have at least as much as you focus on not smoking. Try to remember the way you thought as a little kid, the excitement that every new experience held. That kind of experiential joy leaves little room for addiction.

Weed was never hard for me to quit. I can smoke for 3 weeks everyday and then not smoke for 2 months and I feel no different. But from what I've seen from other people who have conqueored addictions, all you need is stamina. Be stubborn about it. Anyone can quit for a little while its the long periods that people struggle with. You can never let your guard down I guess.

Don't buy it. Drink a glass of wine instead.

EDIT: Wait, you're thinking of having a baby in the near future. Why not tell your doctor that you are a habitual smoker and ask for advice?

    Wow, I can't spell.

We are going to wait to have a baby-at least three years ):.I am going to make an appoitment with a psychiatrist and tell him/her everything and do what they suggest. Funny thing is, I don't really like to drink all that much.

Okay, made appt with a psychiatrist, but it's not until oct 29th (unless they have anyone cancel).
It's the only psychiatrist in town who does not communicate with my company. I am glad I found one. I was worried.

The thing is I have to be high all the time when I have it. There is no middle ground for me. I have such an addictive personality.

Oh Lynsey, I hope I can get the same advice from this thread, too. I don't just think I have a problem, I KNOW I have a problem. I quit for about 2 months a year ago after the house got raided and Daniel went to jail for a bud, but picked it back up recreationally at first, then it became a full-blown habit. Somehow we always have smoke, even if we don't have money, and I sometimes find myself stressing and also scraping together bits and pieces so I can have even a pinch.

Now the problem I face is my obsessive-compulsive tendencies and anxiety that surfaces when I don't have an excess amount of THC in my system. I'm an insomniac, and worrying has worn what I suspect to be an ulcer in my stomach, so my stomach kills me soooo much. But I know that Xanax and anything a doctor could prescribe for me would be so much worse and so much harder to get off of...:(

Honestly, I know what I need to do, I NEED to convince myself that I don't need it because I know that I really don't. I dealt with depression and anxiety without medication for years, I lived completely sober for that long, so I don't see why I couldn't cut waaaaay back. I don't want to just quit, because it's still an activity I enjoy, and it's a lot less harmful than drinking (and a whole lot easier! lol), but I would like to cut way back. It's a sad discovery when you realize that the only time you're really sober is at work.

That is exactly how I feel.
The worst thing about it...is I would go to work stoned...and I work with kids.
I just want to check myself in somewhere for a month where I can get off all my meds and be 'normal' again.
But man, not smoking makes me feel like I am crawling out of my skin. I took a xanax about an hour ago, and still I feel icky and anxious.
It's paralyzing. I get afraid. I am afraid to answer my phone, afraid to check my work emails, afraid to make my appoitments for the rest of the week.

I agree don't find reasons to smoke. Think why you want to quit in the first place
