Hey all, I have been wanting dreadlocks for a long time, but my hair is very short. I started growing it out for 2 months and got it to my eyebrows, than I decided I look weird with long hair(and younger) so I cut it all off. But I realized I wanted dreadlocks again and started growing it back out. Now it is almost at the end of my nose. I really hate the way I look right now and am in my first semester of college. I cant backcomb yet cause all the dreads will be super short and i wanted to wait till my hair got longer. I am highly considering cutting my hair off tomorrow and was definitley gonna do it. But I went back on this site today and now im having second thoughts. What should I do? Cut it or not, I really cant stand the way it looks right now! and I can always get dreads in the future, but then ill have to go through weird hair stage again. Sorry for rambling!

do neither..dont backcomb dont cut put oin a wool tam and let the dreads form naturaly..out of sight out of mind love the weird stage u gotta go through to gain the end ressuilt

throw away your comb and conditioner.. get a non residie soap..
    stop thinking about it
it wil;l go rhtough stages that drive u crazy if u let it....dont let it

bu the time it hits your shoulders you'll have dreads...let it go let it grow and love the crazines it goes throiygh

i used to do the same thing as you, which is why ive never had long hair. but one day i just decided to go for it. my hair was about 2 inches when i stopped combing. you can start to grow your dreads naturally at any length. its been almost 3 months now and my hair is a little longer than 4.5 inches. now that i have 3 months progress i can't imagine cutting my hair.

but i think your biggest problem will be wanting your dreads to look nice all the time. they wont... the sooner you can get past how your hair looks the closer you are to some nice dreads.

Honestly, I really value all of your opinions but I would rather do backcombing than natural for personal reasons. I am pretty close, but I dont know. I'm in florida so winter never really comes :( but I will think heavily on it tonight. Please give me more views. Thanks everyone, it means a lot!

Just so you're aware, backcombing does not always make for instant dreads. Dreadlocks are a process, no matter which way you do it. Mine suck some days, sometimes they don't. I'm curious why you would even want dreadlocks if you don't like how you look with long hair? Do what feels best to you.

just stick it out. that wierd phase is so hard sometimes. it always looks so crazy. you should have seen jrnyman (my loverguy) while he was growing his hair out. it looked SO wierd, lol! but if you just let it go, you'll be through the awkward phase of growing hair out soon, and you'll realize how awesome it is. and if you just stop combing your hair now, you can go through the awkward length and awkward messy phase at the same time, and have rockin awesome dreads like SE said, by the time they reach your shoulders! :)
