Bike Stand is a free urban transport initiative brought to Australia from Sweden. It's being promoted by the Absolut World campaign, and was invented by Sven Andersson. Free bikes installed in the CBD can take hundreds of cars off the road and save the environment. These photos are from the Sydney demonstration. Visit http://www.bikestand.com.au for more info, videos, and to sign the petition to make government support this great initiative! Sign the petition here: http://www.bikestand.com.au
I like that idea, they should do that in the U.S. although I already have a bike so I wouldn't need one. It would be nice to see more bikes... Except those assholes on the race bikes that fly by doing 60. They make me feel slow and fat.
I think a good majority of European cities have bike sharing things like this. I know here in Canada, Montreal will be starting one up soon based off of Paris' and Lyon's bike share idea. A lot of areas will charge small fees, and some charge a fee that you get back when you return the bike.
I think it's a good idea. How do they deal with the need for different size bikes? I'm very short and a lot of standard size bikes don't work for me-the seats don't lower enough for me.
Good question... the issue of compulsory helmets (at least here in NSW) is another detail that needs to be figured out. But with enough political will those important details could be worked out...
