I was lookin' for something to do for a couple before going bed (outside) and I realized I'm DAMN sick and tired of politics, protesting, organizing, AND farming. At least for a minute. Or maybe I'm just worn out from squeezing cider and canning and getting up too early...
SO, this looked like a safe place. How ya-ll been?

Hey EM.. I know what ya mean with all the canning and sucking corn, finely the harvest is all put up and tucked away on the canning shelf.. we had a lot of rain lately and it has extended the harvest a bit and the fall crops we put in are up and growing in abundance.. we missed Ike (barely) and only got about 3 inches of rain and a little wind.. no thunder/lightening or tornados as we usually have this season... I've seen it worse around here.. it just filled up our ponds, which is a good thing.. Ppl went nuts tho.. they hoarded up gas and water and ice and food supplies.. they cleaned my town out of gas altogether.. filling every container they could with gas and left the next fellow without any at all.. I was disgusted with that mindset... and further disgusted with the price of gas that went up 65 cents overnight..piggish behavior, coming from the land of hospitality.. and oil wells.. opps sorry for the politics,, but you did ask.. ;-) besides all that life is good and we are well in body and spirit.. Our youngest is moving back from NC with is family and we are making ready a place to put them.. we had to do a little shifting around.. moving one from the 2 br trailor to the bus, so the babies came have a room to grow in.. we had to redig the old septic to hookup the travel trailor to it.. that will make 12 of us living here now. Our place seems to get smaller every yr.. This will be the first time we get to see the babies in realtime.. just more to love and spoil rotten, more to teach the old ways to.. Blessings Sister Patsy sh

Hey, I dropped in for the same reasons. It feels like a big hug being here. Our harvest was slim this year but I'm encouraged to see local produce geting into the city communities and so many urban neighborhood gardens springing up these past couple of years.

Aha! If you looked at the times I've turned up here lately, they would perfectly correspond to the days of bad weather we get...

The harvest has not ended yet! There is food everywhere! Gathering nuts in the sun is happy work. I dig in the garden to plant fall garlic and find I am digging up succulent wild greens... Still the remaining apples are falling. We tried our first cornbread from the bloody butcher corn I grew. HEAVENLY. Haven't eaten corn meal in several years (since GM). The neighbor brought by some FRESH venison. And the pot of organic red runner beans was exceptional. Still have a couple bushels to pick - already dry. And still more broom corn to cut. The chickens like the seed... And the whole neighborhood is about to learn the art of broom making.

We put up enough hay by hand to keep the horse and a milk cow if I can ever find one around here for sale...

Friends moving into the extra cabin... Victims of foreclosure fiasco. This place could support a lot of people if they all work together. So far so good. It feels good to be alive! Playin' music and eating well.

Laughing in wonder and disgust at "finances" and "politics"... Maybe it pays to be poor in West Virginia after all! I have become very non attached to things that require money. My only current personal worry is how to feed the dogs if I had no $. Hum...

Others around me have a lot more attachments, unfortunately for them if things really go to hell. Myself, I can foresee the possibility of living in the woods off the land and relish the idea. The cave on the hill behind the barn has possibilities...

Activism has it's ups and downs. Without too much detail, Myself and a friend from next county over had an idea. We took it and ran with it. Me pushing. The result was a community meeting with about 70 people in attendance. 70 people now thinking, some taking the ball and running with it. It blows my mind. All we needed to do was invent it and get a place to do it, and they came and things happened.

It really works and it only takes an idea...

Our illustrious highway department has completely ruined our road, so we're expecting to be either mudded or snowed in most of the winter. Many jokes have been made about blowing up the road so that there would be less traffic. But now all we need to do is sit back and wait for the rainy season to come. Worst that could happen is we'll be hiking the 2 miles in and out... :)

I hope all you old hips are ready to settle in to a nice comfy winter...
Toss on another log and roast another chestnut...

    Love ya,
    Earthmother

We're gettin' ready to snuggle down.. the firewoods cut and stacked.. we are still gettin some garden veggies..Lynn had readied the deercamp and the season begins next week.. I will be glad to have some Venison, as last yrs supply had all but run out.. I still have some deer meat I've been saving to make jerkey with.. I give it to the kids for Christmas.. I have to make it on the same day I give it or it would not make it to the stockings hung on the fireplace.... We have Pecans here and we put up about 6 gallons so far but the trees are still loaded so we're not done yet... Our perssimon trees are loaded this yr and more jelly will need to be made.. believe it or not.. I ( n two other ladies) put up 42 jars of Jelly and preserves and I'm already down to two jars... I have never made persimmon jelly before but they look so plump this yr I'm gonna try it. We didn't get much fruit from the orchard this yr.. we had a last frost that took the blooms before they set and we didn't get enough to even make a decent pie. I did find out tho.. if you have a tall windmill it will keep frost away.. if there is wind blowing making the paddles turn.. helicopters flying over will have the same affect on frost.
