if you haven't heard already scientist turned on this tube like machine that cost 11 billion that runs 27 kilometers underground around switzerland today. http://www.news.com.au/technology/story/0,25642,24328608-5014239,00.html "It will be weeks or months before two particles ever crash together in the giant tube, and even longer before scientists can interpret results" "Anything between a year and four years, depending on how difficult this new physics is to find" what i found most interesting was this four year thing. four years from now to get results which will be in 2012. 2012 which marks the year the world ends according to the mayan calender and many other cultures. on one side i think it's pretty cool because they could learn something amazing out of it but on the other hand it's kinda creepy. what do you guys think? some other quotes that i found interesting "No matter what we find, we will be unlocking the secrets of the universe." At full speed the LHC will engineer 600 million collisions every second. Data will be transmitted via a network called The Grid to scientists at 170 institutions in 33 countries.
I think its weird... I mean i'm all for new research and technology.. But when it comes down to risking Planet Earth's survival (is it not?), why would you do it... I still dont understand this, but I just get freaked out by the whole concept... I believe the world will end, when the time is right... No matter what way you look at it, through religion, science, or w/e belief you may have... It will happen when the time is right... (not saying that there is a right time... but we all know it will happen eventually) FREAKY!
You have nothing to be afraid of when it comes to LHC, and 2012 so relax, and maybe try and understand the things you are talking about.
that's really interesting considering that many people, including some scientists are afraid that the LHC will destroy the world by creating black holes.
Whats up with Forum bashing... I think it comes down to people who are low lifes that have nothing else todo but search through forums all day long, bashing on other peoples' posts... So i believe YOU need to relax!
Can you explain? I'm not freaking out about it, but there are quite a few coincidences and I haven't really had anyone explain why I shouldn't worry. I've heard more people worrying than not worrying (which is common). But on a side note, back when they were testing the atomic bomb, there were worries that it would light earth's atmosphere on fire. Since there was no internet back then and the project was so secretive, not many people knew about it, but I think we all know how that turned out .
I think this is pretty damn exciting stuff! To fear the end of the world is somewhat ignorant. The fear is generated by stupid tabloid press written by douchebags who are trying to stir up some fuss in the public. Some obscure scientists claim that it'll produce a black hole or something, but all the top physicists, including good old Stephen Hawking disregard such a thing. We'll be fine, so chill.
If the world is going to end, I'm pretty sure worrying about it won't stop it... Also, it's worth remembering all the carnage the 'Millennium Bug' caused. Oh, and how Jesus came back on New Years Day 2001 But seriously, the forces we are talking about with the capability of binning this rock are immense... and besides, we're all on borrowed time anyways. I don't think the universe really cares what day/month/year we humans say it is... it knows the score, and if our time is up it's up. The thing with scientists is that if there is knowledge out there that can actually be known, it has to be known - example: a normal person sticks a fork in an electrical socket, gets a shock, and thinks "hmmm, I won't do that again in a hurry", but a sciency person thinks "hmmm, I wonder if it does that every time..." tis always gona become a risky buisiness at some point if you are exploring new territory. That said, from what I've read, the LHC is going to help prove/disprove the existence of the Higgs-Boson particle, which may hold the key to cool things like faster-than-light travel (warp drive!). And it might provide us with information on how to detect other dimensions (fancy chatting with the machine elves?) So maybe in 2012 there will be more of a 'paradigm shift' rather than an apocalypse. Maybe into some futuristic 'space age', or some crazy nirvana multidimensional consciousness? Or maybe nothing will happen. Just throwing out some positive possibilities to counteract those doomsday blues
If the scientists really believed something bad enough would happen to "end the world", then it would be stopped. They say the chances are so slim, they'd have to keep that machine running for millenia to have the right things to come together at the right time and in the right way. And they admit microscopic black holes may spawn-but will be so unstable they will simply vanish the smallest amount of time later. The chances are too low for anything doomsday to happen. Some say, "Too many people think it will happen/believe it, so that amount of people cannot ALL be duped." Let me introduce you to religion.
i'm not worried about anything, just found the whole 2012 thing kinda interesting =p and i can't wait to see all the new technology thats to come!
Man the date 2012 is the white interpretation of the end of the mayan long count calender, they had many calenders, each measured a set measure of time, days, weeks, months, years... when you reach the end start over, the long count is the really long one, I guess they figured the mayan civilization would last long enough to understand to start over when the really long one ran out. thats how I understand it, I'm open to reasonable suggestion though. By the way why is this in the gay forum? If I wanted to talk some doomsday insanity I would go to the psychedelics forum.
2012 isn't the end of the world, its the beginning of something new. Their calender didn't end in 2012 it's restarting.
