In the early 80's in Humboldt county California, there was a mountain woman named "Artemis". Tall, long limbed, black hair, and had a distinct love of "chaw". Chewing tobacco. She was a grower. Lived waaay back up in the mountains on a ridgetop with her dogs. Most of the men were scared of her. She would occasionally come down to the Branding Iron saloon in Garberville for a game of pool and a little social interaction. Don't see many strong women like that anymore. x
Didn't know her personally. She was just one of the MANY characters in the marijuana mecca (Garberville) of the United States in that day and time. Strong, independent people, with no love of the government. x
People that want to live in the wilderness are not crazy...some won't take you serious because it is most likely outside anything they have ever considered. I do believe it's an innate part of human nature to seek a more natural existence within our environment... I caution you to understand the state of affairs concerning our environment. I'm not saying you don't, but remember things are considerably different now from the times when native Americans tended these lands. There are virtually no more free migrating animal populations left in this country...save for Yellowstone National Park. Moreover, most ecosystems are not in a needed balance that would be required to support a, how do you call it, natural human population. Simply put, there is too much habitat fragmentation and development across this entire country. Imagine the year 1700. Everything west of the Appalachian Mountain chain was virtually pristine, populated with natives. Even east of the mountains at this time were spectacular. Think about now. The only wilderness stretches are in Protected parks...and IMO the psychological effects of knowing that lands in this country are vastly on the power grid, developed, polluted, threatened, over hunted, over fished, over populated and in a depressing sense, dead. However, I do not claim it cannot be done. But to be totally living in the wilderness off the power gird, without modern day connections is tough and even the most hard-core would agree. There are alternatives to this lifestyle. Some I know are dedicating their property and livelihood to creating a self-sufficient life style. Some live on the road and drift from forest to forest. Be it in a van, car or on foot. I would suggest that you get to know exactly what would suit you...totally in the wilderness? Commune? etc. I would also, at your age, and since I'm Appalachian Trail fan and you live by the mountain range, walk it. This will give you a great feel for what you want. I hoped I helped you.
I know there is a lot I should learn before I even try but i really just don't see any other fulfilling way of living I've thought about that too, getting a bus I know for sure things are a lot different I wouldn't kill or hurt any of the animals though or take up any space im just hoping i can live in harmony with them I know what you're saying though I don't think I'll take up much space though, or disturb any of the animals I'll try to make sure that i don't I want to help the forests and animals by being there, maybe by planting I dont know I have plenty of time to figure out different ways I can help I'm a vegetarian so i dont plan on fishing or hunting or anything like that. I have a vegetable garden that I've planted that i could dig up and bring with me maybe, and i could always grow more I don't think i would totally cut myself off from the rest of the world I know it will probably take me a long time to get used to anything like that i might start by spending a few nights in the local woods I've also thought about doing that maybe buying a bit of land out somewhere where there is a lot a lot of nature and building my own little hut or if i could find a cave like that one above, that would be amazing Thanks though, yea you've helped a lot I was planning on trying a bunch of different things before I actually decide I just look at it like i have all the time I want to explore and change things as long as i dont die I dont have to make a solid decision I live about 2 hours from Boone but im going near the end of October so im going to walk all around that area I want to live in the woods near there, in the mountains not too far away from civilization but far enough but yea thanks : ] I'm glad you're supportive
Ohh gosh I feel yah hun!! My family thinks I am weird because of the way I want to live But I dont care about that because it doesnt matter you are the one that creates your destiny.
