Before I begin I ask you to be tolerant of this alternative view. You may find it controversial. Know that my intentions are good and that I love God deeply. Here we go... Everything ever created by humans ultimately has its origin in the human brain. Every word we have invented has its origin in human awareness. We must become aware of something in order to find a word for it, not to mention inventing systems for organizing those words into writing. Houses, bridges, the internet, clothes, cars, warheads, governments, states, churches, marriage, divorce... Everything ever invented and created by humans originate from human brains/inventiveness - internal environment - and is then built/created and "projected" into our external environments. Church/State - From 1 to 2? Church is an external projection/building of intimate human emotions - love and compassion. Church is a place of Worship, of social unity. Church and State was 1, now they're separated. But they are still 1 in the human state of mind if you'll allow me to refer to Church and religion as the most profound and strongest of our human emotions. State, on the other hand is about reason, not emotion. BUT emotion and reason interact in the human brain. They're inseparable. Why did Church and State separate if they are 1 in the human state of mind? As Jared Diamond mentions in his book Guns, Germs, and Steel, State/Government has always used religion in order to justify conquests and wars. A very unfortunate connection in deed, but noone would fight anyone else based on dry facts and cold reason. Religion/Church thus provided the emotions State needed for his underlying goals of increasing wealth and political power. History is a teacher... Now State has divorced Church, and State has found his Anne Boleyn in Industry (also taking in her illegitimate child, Science). My point is this... God is 1 unless we believe that God is separate and removed from us. Our human emotions, love and compassion and inseparable reasons are 1 unless we believe that they're separate. The human tendency to believe in God, write scriptures and design places to worship God testifies to to an intimate truth... God is within you and me and every other human being who believes in God. You can awaken God within and bring him out. You can love the mind you're in and be in Church wherever you go. What about the Devil? Is he real? Very much so. Throughout human history, dictators, rulers, monarchs, and presidents have used love, compassion, and virtuous beliefs in order to ignite anger, fear, and hatred, and caused death and violence. People have been burned, tortured, beheaded in public to spread fear and terror, and to force people to obey and submit to their rulers' self-serving orders. Was Hitler not a Devil? Yes, Hitler brought out the Devil within and spread the Devil's words and actions across the lands. Can you think of anyone else who brings out the Devil within and tries to spread fear, terror, and violence today? Can you think of someone who brings out God within, speaks, lives, and shows love and compassion for others? Do you feel at one with God, and how do you act towards the people you meet every day?
The whole point of Christianity...no thats wrong. The whole point of Jesus' teachings, is to realize the God within. This is far removed of what Christianity teaches, though several eastern faiths embrace this concept of "oneness" I see humanity as a single organism composed of many individual cells. x
Yeah, and imagine what happens to the organism when each individual cell thinks it has its own separate interests, often in competition and in conflict with the other cells, and sometimes even resulting in destruction of other cells in order to further this agenda.
Long term negative emotions, fear and/or anger, producing stress and more negative emotions, hostility, hatred etc. actually lead to brain cell death in the hippocampus. The fight or flight cycle thus continues uninhibited, further breaking down cell communication, causing withdrawal of messenger proteins, social withdrawal, severe depression and collective suicide of 100 trillion cells - the human being - as possible outcomes. It is very logical. Compassion and love produces the opposite effects within the brain, as seen in fMRI brain scans during compassion meditation. Devil vs God was an emotional metaphor, you can see the same principles in action on a macro level, for example Hitler vs JFK or the Dalai Lama. Or Bush/McCain/Palin vs Obama. My point exactly.
In the words of Aliester Crowley, "There is no god but man". Creating unity with the more spiritual side of human existence is one of the primary goals of occultism, and not that much different than what you propose here. For me personally, god is dead, and cannot exist either externally or as a figment of the mind. When I say god is dead, I don't mean that he once existed but no longer exists, I mean it is most likely that no such creature ever existed and and the concept is dead within me, a belief that once had a place in my being but no longer has place. The concept of a dead god is more of an internal feeling than anything else. But as you say god was never anything but a state of mind to begin with.
