i used to dye my hair a lot. now i really want to keep my hair healthy and stop putting chemicals in it. only now my hair is black (it was actually medium brown naturally) and i dont like it. i tried dying it lighter once but it only worked on my roots. so does anyone know a natural way to make my hair lighter? i really dont know how i can wait until it all grows out! will appreciate any replies. thanks so much! :)

i'm having the same problem (well, originally i had a nice auburn color and now i'm dark brown). And i talked to my stylist and she's going to do a chemical treatment to lighten it and then match a dye to my original color and then i'll let it grow out.

I'll keep it healthy and natural after. I'm only waiting so I don't completely kill it when i do this.

as for natural ways, i'm sorry i can't be of much help.

ah i wanted to avoid having any more chemicals put into my hair. the closest to a stylist ive ever had was getting a trim at supercuts. lol

anyway, its easier to get brown out than black. lucky. lol

Squeeze lemons on your hair and hang out in the sunshine.

Got this from: they have like 4 pages on how to take care of your hair with natural ways. http://www.rd.com/advice-and-know-how/natural-hair-care-tips/article26784-1.html

    Spices
You can spice up your hair care regimen with a homemade tonic that will enhance your natural color and impart shine. For dark hair, use 1 tablespoon crumbled sage or 1 sprig chopped fresh rosemary or a mixture of 1 teaspoon allspice, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves. For blond hair, use 1 tablespoon chamomile. Pour 1 cup boiling water over the herb or spice mix, let it steep for 30 minutes, strain it through a coffee filter, and let it cool. Pour it repeatedly over your hair (use a dishpan to catch the runoff) as a final rinse after shampooing.

hmm, ill probably try the lemons first, see if that works. black does fade, thats why ive had to re-dye it before.

ok... first question. you say your hair "used to be" naturally dark brown. but now it's black. is it dyed black or is it natural black?

if it's dyed black, chemicals are the only way you'll strip it out. it's impossible to get it out any other way. i know from experience. and salons charge a shitload to do it.

but they have haircolor remover kits at walmart. depending on the length of your hair, you'll have to maybe use more than one kit. and it most likely won't take it out evenly. mine had splotches. it's basically bleaching it, but it really does work. then just dye to something close to your natural hair color, and let it grow out.

and condition the HELL out of it afterwards. otherwise you'll have crispy hairs.

I did this last March, my hair got fried to SHIT, on saturday I had to go and get it choped it off. It's at my shoulder now.

Lesson learnt: don't dye your hair black

I've dyed my hair alot with chemicals too...
not too sure of anyway besides lemon juice...or henna(but I personally have had NO luck with henna working)
but I use a hemp shampoo and conditioner. They work so well on the damaged hair. just a thought.

    yes it was dyed black.

the only thing that seems to work, might be using a straightener. i used to straighten my hair all the time and that always faded my hair (which caused me to dye it again...stupid). its still is bad but i would rather not spend more money and kill my hair with chemicals.

also, the more times you repeatedly dye with permanent black dye, the harder it will be to get it out. something that would have faded it before might not fade it now. if the straightener doesn't work, try the haircolor stripper... or just deal with the growing out two toned color.
