i have 250 gb external HD... i need to transfer 4 gigs data into my thumbdrive... but, it took very long... for transferring 4 gigs data, it took more than 12 minutes... if its the low rate, can i increase my usb transfer rate...? where the setting take place...? thanks in advance
Are you using Windows? If so, then you cannot increase volume transfer rates. If you are using Linux, you can tune the transfer rates for maximum transmission speed, or quickest response time. You mention both a 'thumb drive' and an 'external hard drive'. These are two different devices, so which is it? External hard drives are not as fast as internals. Also, remember that USB 2.0 is rated at 480Mbit/s (1024B = 1Kb, 1024Kb = 1Mb, 1024Mb = 1Gb). You can do the math. If you're interested, Firewire is a lot faster than USB 2.0 .
oh ok, basically i understand the standart transfer rate for the USB... i just thinking my transfer rate is slower than normal... ok, i mean i want to transfer my data from my external hard drive into my thumbdrive... well anyway, thanks for the response...
This is a totally conditional question depending on the files you are copying to how fast the flash memory or disk you are copying to is. Also you will never get the full transfer rate of 480 MBPS over usb as there are other things to conceder overheads on the packets etc. But i 4GB in 12 mins is not to bad really sounds about average to copy to a usb 2 drive.
It's hardware design. It sounds like your External Harddrive is running USB 1.0 or 1.1, which was invented in 1995 and is slow as fuck. If it isn't your Hard Drive, it might be the port you're plugging it into. On some older computers, some USB ports are low-speed(1.0,1.1) while the other ports are high-speed(2.0). Windows usually gives you a pop-up telling you if you're plugged into a low-speed port. I can't think of a way to change the speed through Windows, I doubt it's possible though.
