Whether you know it or not, Vermont is unlike any other place in the country. People in Vermont tend to be tolerant to a fault, very against big government, and extremely independent. Vermont is the only state in the country to send a socialist to the house and then to the senate, Bernie Sanders(I). Senator Patrick Leahy (D) of Vermont, constantly stands up to other members of congress and is one of the strongest critics of the executive branch, and other more tyrannical members of congress. One other widely underreported fact about Vermont is that secession from the United States is becoming a viable reality. I myself am very proud to live in one of the last holdouts of freedom in what has become an overtly oppressive society. I can tell you from firsthand experience that the secession ideology around here is becoming quite vocal, it's a regular topic in local newspapers, editorials, local television stations, as well as in local areas of commerce and learning. On April 1, 2007 the Washington Post published this editorial:

Very interesting....if Vermont were to seceede, other states might follow. There has been talk of it here in SC too...though it isn't very vocal.

I've been living ion Vermont since I was 10, back in '80. Vermont is a very kind place, and some friends of mine want the state to secede, but I disagree. Now more than ever we need unity, solidarity, not more division and separation. I don't like what the federal government is doing either, but it's ours, and it at least has the potential to be more democratic. Big corporations are tearing apart the world, and since they are private entities, they are unaccountable to us, the public. The federal government, if used properly, is the only defense we have against global private tyranny. One state, especially as small as Vermont, could never stand up to say, General Electric, but the federal government can. I know there would need to be major changes before the feds would come to the aid of the regular people, but there is real potential there if we want to come together and make it happen, but the more divided, and disenfranchised we become, the less power we have to stand up to private power.
