so i love listening to drum and bass or techno or anything electronic when im high. i love pendulum and oakenfold but i am looking to expand my musical horizons. any suggestions?
i looked at this thread and was like why the fuck are there .3 replies? but then i realized there was something on my computer screen
i suggest listening to real musicians.. last i checked i couldn't buy a computer at a musical instrument store..
Not massive on the DnB these days, I only really like the darker techstep end- artists like Dylan, The Panacea, Limewax, Technichal Itch, Raiden, Proket, Cooh, Loxy etc more fucked up and harder style, more interesting drum patterns often and nastier acidy sounds... I can't stand the jump up crap- Aphrodite, Andy C, Subfocus, High Contrast etc- it's kiddie music to me, predictable and no fun to dance to IMO. Alright for being 17 and boshing your first pill but not my cup of tea tbh- also it attracts a shittier crowd over here.. Gimme some proper badbwoy mid 90s jungle over dnb any day though... On the subject of electronic music in general I've been quite liking the dubstep sound which is pretty popular and the 'in' thing over here at the moment- you have to sift through the crap to find the good stuff- and there's a lot of crap- as with most things, but the good stuff is really good... Quite funny to see people dancing like nutters to pretty slow music too.. Big fan of the minimal techno/tech house sound- labels like Tuning Spork, Cocoon Recordings, Poker Flat and Traum Schallplatten all have pretty consistently decent releases.. Always have a soft spot for psychedelic trance, as this was the music I first started DJing and buying loads of records years ago. Again, 90% of psytrance is shit but that 10% is the best music to party too imo.. My friend has been DJing for Triplag this year, Stalk.. They did a really good party down here a little while ago.. I can't deal with that headfuck trauma trance sound all night but it's good stuff when done right. I think I'm getting old as I'm listening to more progressive psy these days. If you like the darker stuff but also looking for that proggy groove you should check Sensient from Australia if you don't already know him, the Anti Fluoro album in particular is great..UK has the best psy labels imo: Twisted (still!), Pharpsyde, Organic, Liquid, WildThings all release cutting edge stuff. Other good labels: Iboga, Doof, Glowing Flame, Peak, Zenon, Plusquam are all pretty hot.. Also like the Finnish suomisaundi style, Exogenic, Psy Harmonics, Fabula, Hippie Killer are good labels.. Pretty narrow minded view there- almost everything has potential to be used as an instrument, why set boundaries in music? It's supposed to be about creativity, not sticking stuff in boxes and putting labels on it or bitching about what is and what isn't an instrument. Pink Floyd recorded some stuff using only household objects as instruments. Anyway, a lot of producers only use hardware, no computers involved... If you knew anything about producing and arranging electronic music you'd know there is a lot of skill and talent required to make something half decent sounding.. Arguably it's a lot easier to pick up a guitar and make a nice sound with a limited number of chords- needs much less skill or ear for music (and I'm a guitarist)... Also, the electronic thing works on a different part of the brain- something very tribal about it all, the gathering and the trance states and the relentless music can really get you 'in the zone'. Personally I can open my mind further and find myself having all sorts of crazy thoughts and revelations on the dancefloor or in the forest with some sunshine and good music (and that's without the drugs).. Listening to someone else's lyrics often doesn't do it for me, I'd much rather listen to my own trip and not someone else's which has no personal meaning. You can interpret instrumental music how you want and it means something different to each individual, a good thing imo.. I listen to everything from techno to jazz to punk rock to idm to reggae to ambient, downtempo, breaks, electro, hip hop, funk, soul, breakcore, gabber, klezmer, folk, kraut rock, flamenco, whatever. It's good to keep your boundaries open and love music for music not labelling and dismissing styles... Oops, epic post...
