Has anyone else here read The Dark Tower series? And if so, what did you think of it? I'm not a very strong reader, but just recently I've been looking to get into books more (I think it far more rewarding than watching television), and so was inspired by the film 'I, Robot' to by 'The Complete Robot' by Issac Asimov. Thing is, I've almost finished and need something new to move onto. Now I've already got 'The Gunslinger' (which for everyone that does not know, is the first book in the series), and plan to read it as soon as I've finished my robot book, but I'm also looking for other readers, maybe so that I can compare notes with them, etc.. (I'm told the story is very indepth, covering almost all of his books in one way or another). I already know that I like Steven King, and have read a number of his short stories, but this is the first time I've ever attempted to read anything more than a short story.. so it's going to be a bit of an adventure for me (provided I can keep up that is). Anyway, any King fans here? Specificly fans of The Dark Tower?
I'm an avid reader and I have read The Drawing of the Three. It was really good and I plan to read the rest someday. Right now I'm reading "It"
I've read all of King's books. The Dark Tower series is on book 6 (which I just finished), of 7 (which should be out next summer?). The Dark Tower is the axis on which all of King's works spin. If you're looking for a Steven King horror story though, you will be sorely dissapointed. This is Sci-Fi/Fantasy at it's absolute finest. Say Thankya I hope we're well met.
I've read all the Dark Towers (except for 7 of course). THey kick ass! Can't wait till the last one comes out. I think its this fall.
Part 7 is due out sometime around the end of september.Hearts in atlantis is full of references to this series, and so is the talisman & black house(both written with Peter Straub) Im on part 5:wolves of the calla now. This set is possibly King's best work ever IMO
I'm a huge Tower junkie. I'm actually planning a convention. How nerdy am I, right? You should definitely give these books a chance. It's a great epic story that I think most people would enjoy.
I'm pretty much hooked on the Dark Tower series, although I've only read the first four books so far - I'm waiting for book 5 to come out in paperback. I'll admit I was a little concerned while reading The Gunslinger. I mean, it's a good book but not a great book. I needn't have worried. The Drawing of the Three and The Wastelands were so good I read them back to back over the course of a weekend.
There's a website called thedarktower.net which has some great information about this series. It's helpful if you're like me and read the books as they came out. (well, except the first two ---) It helps keep you caught up with characters, events, references etc. Some interesting forums too if you're interested. I love the series, I just wrote in another thread on the books board that it's not unlike King's other works, but it's not a lot like them either. I give it two thumbs up! Gina.
Yeah the Tower series is great. I finished Wolves of the Calla last month, have not picked up the next one yet. Am reading the Talisman right now
that's funny... i had a big discussion about the series just earlier today. i really didn't think i would like it, but it turned out that it's the best stephen king i've ever read, especially the first book. i've recommended it to quite a few of my friends.
I started to read the first book but then I never finished...but I will one day. heh, I had to take a King break...I read too many of his books in a row.
My sister loves the Dark Tower series. Every time one of the books ends, she crys. I guess thats how good they are. But I think you need to read them a few times in order to understand everything
I think that a lot of people have trouble with the first book the first time around (I know I am), I think it might be best to just skip it and move onto the second one... you'll be glad you didn't abandon the series.
I am an avid reader and have pretty much all of Stephen King's books, including not a few of his short stories. I have to say that the Dark Tower series is my favorite along with the Talisman that he wrote with Peter Struab. They are similar is some ways but are both fantastic. I would and have recommended The Dark Tower series to a number of people. It ROCKS!!!!!! I have read up to number six and am dying for number seven. Also you couldn't have picked a better to start this series. I read number four in 2000 and number 5 didn't come out until this year. So that was a long time to wait. But it was totally worth it. These are some of the best books that I have ever read.
I have tried reading a couple different books of his lately, I can't get into any of them. So I just took a break and started some James Patterson...because I love his books as much as I love King's.
Hasnt anyone read The Dark Tower yet, book 7, the final book in the series??? All i can say is that it is as good as it should be. This series is not only a must for King fans but very readable to people that hate King(thats me). He even cracks on himself in the last 2 books for being such a pop writer and not using his talent fully. The simplicity with which anyone can easily fall in love with these characters, especially roland, and to the point of actually caring...not just curiosity, but real feeling...informs us skeptics that King truly can spin a remarkable yarn. READ THE GUNSLINGER, get into it, force it if u think u cant, and enter into the world of gunslingers, of gilead and the high speach, a world in which the Roland is the last of a band of knights who are charged with protecting the ways of light from the ways of darkness. This is King Aurther meets Mad Max meets a Kaufman screenplay with edward burton as director. I read the Gunslinger and fell in love...u will to.
I'm a steven king reader..i really liked it and the drawing of the three and the talisman..but it was the first thing i ever read and it got me hooked lol! You ought to like them and good luck
I've finished The Gunslinger (after skiping about 1/4th of the book cos I got bored with it) and am now reading the second story... WOW.....
I really like Stephen King. My favorite story of his that I have read would be 'The Langoliers' in the Four Past Midnight book. I loved it, it was really scary at times... you know when you get a little paranoid and you think the bad guy really is lurking in the shadows?..... No?..... alrighty.... I have also read the Night Shift short stories, but they weren't as good as the Langoliers.... Peace, Holly
I haven't read the Dark Towers series, but just for all you King fans out there, my favorite is Rose Madder. I think its one of his earlier books, i picked it up at a second hand book store, but an amazing read. I also like Desperation, not a good one for the weak of stomach.
