What does it mean to 'Treat your body like a temple'?

About fourteen years ago something divided me and messed me up, which took me on a search for who i was, what had happened and why.
In the next year and a half of pain and suffering and panic attacks... unable to understand what was going on, normal and regular habits of pot smoking and masturbation became extreme in my (unconcious) search for wholeness. I was forced to raise my awareness in this way, otherwise in my unconciousness i may have destroyed my own body ... the ego/mind destroying it's host.
So, ... that year and a half was hell interspersed with sweetness as i looked within for some meaning and resolution to my predicament. Eventually love blossomed and soon afterwards, a surrender and meeting with 'The light'.
The light told me i had learned to love but that i couldn't stay in that place ... my natural state, but if i 'treated my body like a temple' i would be able to return sometime.
This put and end to the absolute self destruction, but i wasn't really sure about the message "treat your body like a temple'.... what does it mean? I have some ideas which basically revolve around a balance in all things and nothing (except love) to extremes, ... seeing the physical body as part and parcel of myself and my other, more subtle bodies in form.
...So my body is both a temple and 'platform' through which i experience life ... not to cling to, but not to destroy either.
So my question .... how would you regard this suggestion of 'treating your body like a temple'?

    :)

Well it seems i'm starting to find answers to my own question, thanks to Eckhart Tolle and his writing about the 'inner body' and something he quoted from Jesus: "Before you enter the temple, Forgive."

well it is my experience that all things in moderation are not good nor bad for ur body. like too much vitamins and minerals are bad for you, to much or not enough of of anything is like the same way.

The body is the dwelling place of Consciousness or Spirit. In that holy union, body and mind are one.

There are artists who do so. I wouldn't hang it in my home, but it sells well.

well, actually, andy warhol would piss on some of his canvases. as far as shit goes, i don't know. but it seems like argiope's post has no point except to detract from mine, which i thought was a fine metaphor...

everything is sacred, and connected, your body is a temple, but where does your body really end? all we can do is keep loving and letting ourselves grow

If you treat your body like crap, I sincerely believe that it will make the rest of your being feel like crap, the spiritual, the intellectual, and the physical. Like others have said, moderation is key. Your body usually tells you when it's had enough.
