Anybody ever listen to this guy? He's unbelievable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFws4iF0xFE&feature=related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-W9MD8kTAQ&feature=related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UauECrCIYl8
Yeah, he's amazing. I actually like his regular guitar playing better than his slide playing. His tone and phrasing are beautiful.
Yeah I like how smooth and relaxed his playing feels to me. In contrast to say Joe Bonamassa who sounds very clenched to me, tight, agressive. if that makes any sense.
I've always thought Trucks plays more like a horn player than a guitarist. I wouldn't say he's always smooth and relaxed, but when he wants tension or an aggressive sound, he'll start slow and build it up till he's got almost ecstatic energy. Listen to this. Probably one of my favourite guitar solos ever played. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vuadh1o0yC8 In the Allman Brothers Band, he and Warren Haynes complement each other nicely. Both guitarists take a similar approach to improvisation, but their styles and sound are totally different. I used to listen to them constantly, and I think I've absorbed some aspects of their styles in my own playing.
Yes, he is good. But....check this dude out. Aynsley Lister. Just a young dude from thr UK. He had an acoustic CD called SuperKev and Pilchards out some years ago, and it's blazing stuff. As good as Trucks any day of the week, and it's acoustic, much harder than a nice long neck Gibson SG like Trucks uses. However, young dudes, for the real eye opener, check out old Johnny Winter doing Highway 61 on the latest Eric Clapton blues event he has going in Chicago every year. His tone and slide shimmer just ooze solid class. Trucks backs him up and just look at his face. It's a picture. A truly great slide player only has to do the simplest lick, and it will sound immense. A lesser player will always do the tricks and speed. Every time. Just wait and see what Trucks plays in 30 years time?!?!
