If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it does it make a sound? Well, what do you say, I say no, because how can a sound exist if it's not heard... oh and feel free to post other questions like this (no sure the name of them, if they have one). EDIT: here's some more I'd like to add... - If shampoo comes in so many colours, why is the lather on your head always white? - Why do people say "It's always in the last place you look"? Of course it is always in the last place you look, what kind of moron would keep on looking after he'd found it? - Why is there an eject button on the remote when you have to get up to get the video? - What colour hair do bald men put down on their driver's licence?
They're called inponderables... I believe things exist wether or not they are seen. Faith to an extent, my friend.
of course it makes a sound. Otherwise hearing would not be the "device" you would seek to identify it.
I think it definitely makes a sound- just because a person is not around to hear it doesn't mean it doesn't exist
...if there's a universe without any form of life, that cannot be encountered or detected any other universe, does that universe exist?
it's sort of like, maybe things only exist through our perception.... in the room next to me, i think i know what's there, but maybe it doesn't really exist. the problem is, if the world is nothing but perceived information, then that means that it's only what we've chosen to create for ourselves, which means that..... well, what's the truth? there is no reality.
does a stereo thats playing music make a sound if no one is in the house to hear it......yes. The sound is still being made. Besides, squirrels would hear it even if no people were in the forest, and squirrels count.
even if no squirrels or animals were around, the trees could hear their brother falling to the ground
the squirrels...... we have no proof that the squirrels have heard anything, not to mention their own existence if we're not around to observe it. the sound is still being made on the stereo because you assume that your surroundings remain the same when you're not there, or simply continue to exist. the only proof we have for anything existing is our own perception, and even that becomes questionable when we wonder about it's reliability, and those things we aren't perceiving. this question has been discussed and debated for ages..... it's not as simple as it looks, if you open your mind and really ponder. philosophy isn't about the obvious, but the devious.
what do you mean? i can see where you're going, but elaborate.... if the whole universe is alive, are there separate souls? what are you, a temporary break-off from the single life form? .... do you believe in god? where does he fit in or not fit in to a living universe? ....i'm wrecking the original purpose of this thread.
hmmm, I've always hated philosophy...probably because I am not smart, and don't enjoy thinking. Actually i can't stop thinking, but still hate philosophy.
it's there in there next room.. just like you thought.. does the dishes in the sink dissapear when you leave the kitchen.. and reapear when you return to the kitchen..
