so my cat, Geoffrey, is fourteen years old (almost 15) and has long hair .before the summer we noticed that he was off his food and kept vomiting when he did eat. after we went on holiday we took him to the vet, the vet did blood tests and shaved his belly (because he had huge knots of fur). the vet found nothing wrong but wormed him a gave him anti biotics. after this he bucked up and started eating lots (his record was 8 pieces of ham, tin of sardines and two wiskers pouches in one day + grazing on dry food in). we were glad off the change but in the last 2 weeks we have noticed that he's not grooming and that hes getting lumps all over his back, neck, the fur at the edges of the shaved bit etc. So i was wondering what advice you'd have at A) is it just old age or something else? B) what is the most effective was of getting rid of knots other than daily brushing, or should i just call a professinal groomer in? thanks for any help edd.
Well, old cats are like old people. The DNA ain't what it used to be so weird things start growing sometimes. They could be benign fatty tumors. No worry if they are, but they can get quite large. You need a brush that looks like a 1000 tiny wires in it. My cat is also a longhair and gets knotted pretty easily. I brush him at least twice a day with a stiff hair brush them use the grooming brush I just mentioned. You've got to get the belly and armpits everytime. Winter coats are the worst. I still have to cut the knots out of him in the spring. Your cat is likely in the end days of it's life at this age. You should prepare yourself for that unfortunate day. Good luck. x
I have two cats in bad shape as well. They are both 14 and throw up just about every day. I've taken them to the vet (spent hundreds) and they can't find anything wrong with them. One of them has lost 8 lbs in the past two years and the other is the same weight. They are still active and seem happy, so I have no reason to put them down, but I sure am getting sick of cleaning up cat vomit! And, why can't they puke on the linoleum or hard wood?! They insist on the carpet upstairs or rug downstairs!
