Hey! I have a question about layering and dreads. I have some layers that have been growing out for some time now. The hair on the top of my head is about 7-8 inches long, and the hair at the bottom of my head is about 8-9 inches long. However, the hair on the bottom looks much longer than the hair on the top. Will my dreads look funny if I do my hair into dreads now, or should I let my hair level out more? I don't want to look like I have a christmas tree, or a pyramid on my head, lol. Would they level out after awhile in dreads or would they always have the layered look? I am planning on back combing, but not using any wax. Thanks for your time and your help.

see my reply to your other post in the sticky

but the concencesd version a 2 inch difference in hair length will be less then 1/4 inch diggerence in dread length

i saidfd more in the other post but im tired...too tired to repeat myself (or spell said right)

i disagree SE. my hair was only SLIGHTLY layered when i started my dreads, and they're ALL different lengths now. of course, i did have some breaking because i was very not nice to my dreads for a while. but it would have been a big difference anyways.

OP you will most likely still see a difference in the lengths of some of the dreads d/t the layers, but depending on how each dread locks up, some pull up much shorter than others. i have some that nearly doubled on each other, and others that stayed almost the same length. so it varies depending on the looping they do.

but i like the layers (now that it's longer, that is... when it was so short i couldn't get any of it back, it looked wierd and was annoying), and i don't think it looks wierd. :D good luck with your journey! (BTW, backcomb only once, and then leave it, it will look shitty for a little and then look fabulous. otherwise you may lose chunks of your dreads cause they like to break and stuff. i learned that the hard way)

I like the layer-thing! I had it myself when I started one year ago and asked the same question as you do now. Today I'm just so glad that I didn't cut it shorter to make it the same length. It looks a bit wilder I think.
    Good luck with yours :)

I'm a bit unhappy right now with old crocheting going wrong so we'll see if I'll post some pics later.
