May I invite a guest into this? She recently moved from the UK to Canada. She may have an insight to our conversation that could help both of us.
This is something that's annoyed me for quite some time. I've frequently been advised to boycott this or that product, while the person who's been advising me has been happy to support international drug cartels. It's only a problem if you expect a world of absolutes. Everything we do involves some level of cruelty, suffering or environmental damage. The thing is to choose the fights in which you feel able to engage. But then to what extent are boycotts about changing the practices of a company, and to what extent are they a personal statement about what we find acceptable as individuals? No boycott is ever gonna change Coca Cola, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't boycott them if it makes you feel better about yourself. In fact, I see my vegetarianism as a boycott of meat. I don't expect to drive the meat industry out of business, but it's an industry that I can't bring myself to participate in as a consumer. Never gonna happen. No way. No party's ever gonna line itself up for the electoral fallout of being seen to endorse drugs. More importantly though, the EU would have ten types of fit if we made any move in that direction. Added to which, if it was legalised, the goverment would have to make sure all ganja was domestically produced, or we'd be supporting the international drug trafficers that we have numerous treaties with other countries obliging us to root them out and destroy them! Wouldn't make us too popular internationally. Then of course if domestic production was legalised, we'd soon be exporting to the rest of Europe on the black market. Oh yeah, that'd go down real well! I think there's a good chance of seeing it properly decriminalised, but the chance of it being legalised anytime soon are zero.
glad we agree on this one Dok! I'm just a bit surprised at myself for not having seen it before (and a bit annoyed at myself I must admit) I've always been of the opinion that the larger issues should be dealt with first and the international drugs trade has so many spin offs like the slave trade and human trafficing for instance that are very large issues. Ok so the children aren't being taken by the LRA or anything but I feel it's a problem on the same scale and should be dealt with on that level. Too true, I know that people stop taking drugs every day for a myriad of reasons so I don't think me quiting will really make a difference but then it is something I can do for myself and at least try and make a few other people aware of. ok, this is more what I meant, should have made myself more clear.
How did ya guess??? Yup it sure was me but I didn't get his PM until now. I have been playing good Mommy all day and took my 8 year old to get his ear pierced now that his up tight Dad isn't around and got them each a mini fish tank thingy and a Beta Fish (chinese fighting fish) to keep in their rooms. :H :sunglasse :H Well I have to say I smoke for a completely different reason then anyone has listed here so far. I have also been smokin it since before you where even born MagicMonkey. When I first started smoking it was for pleasure and recreational perposes but now.............. I smoke to live. I smoke for two reasons actually. I have a sleep disorder and sleep about 2 hours a night most nights with NO REM sleep. When I smoke a bit I get about 6 hours and a bit of REM sleep too (heaven). I also use it as a form of pain relief as I have a medical condition that leaves me in varying degrees of pain 24/7 so I use weed to ease the pain at times. I do not smoke everyday and only at night before bed as I am a single Mom and need my brain around with the kids during the day. Now on to the debate. I agree 100% about not supporting big drug dealers as there are people being exploited (sp) by them all the time. I have always smoked home grown when I could grow it and bought from freinds who grew when I could. I have to say I just got on Friday my seed order so once I am settled in MY house I will be starting my growin' project. I DO NOT do any form of chemical drugs (other then the shit the Doc gives me) as I don't agree with them or how they are produced as you are never sure what you are putting into your body as they can be made differently by each person. Yes I agree Matt the US is so uptight about everything they will never make weed legal or even decriminalize it, the UK on the other hand I can see it happening some day. The Government there isn't as uptight as the States even if Tony Blair is just Bush's puppet, but thats a different debate there. I doubt it will ever be legal in either country (UK or Canada) be decriminalized more like it but not legal. Canada hasn't gone so far as to legalize it but I know of places in BC where you can spark up a J on main street and not have to worry about it. Just don't get caught trying to sell it to anyone. All depends on the local government as well up here. Some places are just as uptight as the States but less and less as time goes on. I live in cowboy country so it isn't as open here as in BC. Once I get all my medical shit sorted out here I SHOULD be able to get a permit to grow and carry a set amount of weed for my health conditions I think it is 10 plants I can grow and I can't remember how much I can hold at a time for personal use. My health condition is one that you can get an RX from your Doc for it here. You just have to find the right Doc as some still will not give it to ya. My cousin works in a pharmacy so I should be able to find out which Doc to go to once I get my health care and shit all sorted out. But back to the main point here. Yes boycotting the huge drug guys can work but only if you have enough people behind you as like someone said before if you don't buy it someone else will. I agree to do your part but don't expect it to really change much. And I also agree legalizing it doesn't make it any better you have already quoted a number of legal products that use slave labour for a lack of a better way to put it. I am not sure what the answer would be but for my own personal useage I go to my guy who I know gets it from a home grown source in Canada or I grow my own. I will not support some trumped up Drug baron in Columbia if I can help it. I have gone without for months for that very reason that and sorry to say UK shit sucks. Or at least the stuff I could get. All I could get was soap bar and I hate that the few times I managed to get a bit of homegrown while I was there I was in heaven. OMG!!! This post goes on forever. I will stop now but in the words of Arnie "I'll be back" Love & Opinions EnonEmouse
it's all well and good boycotting hard drugs, do it if like i don't mind... means there's more for me to buy .. but something you should bring into the thought process is that in countries like cuba, the cocaine industy has taken over the country so much that now it is necessary to sustain the industry in order to keep the economic structure sound.. a lot of farmers in cuba and other parts of latin america need to farm this in order to survive.. hell its used as currency in someplaces for most of the year... its an important export for these countries.. and it's the u.s government provoking all the harsh killings over it.(or thats what i got from that thread i read on here)... so yes its probably bad and i should boycott it.. but without the industry there is the possiblity of more human trauma. well thats my justification anyways
Good point mate! Having said that though as I know that my contribution alone won't make a scrap of difference that far up the ladder it's not something I need to think about right now, or you for that matter!
talking of contributions tho... your either contributing to the botcotting of it or the production of it.. either way your contribution isn't making a scap of difference... soooo. its just a case of justification for the hedonism of slef... you feel good when you do your bit (however insignificant it eventually is) and i feel good when i put things up my nose and beleive that by doing so i have give a little cuban famer some food for his family( howerver insignificant it eventually is). just a case of finding your hedonistic angle for justification. or summink like that anyway.
Yeah, arguing that coke use is helping the poor is kinda like saying you feel good when you toss a hooker a few quid after fucking her up the ass.
Maybe you'd be better off plying your trade from one of those windows if you're not keen on the street work
On a more serious note, I find the idea of men 'using' prostitutes totally fucking disgusting. About a year ago, a few guys that I work with went to Amsterdam. They planned to buy themselves some sex while they were there. Listening to them talk about this, I had problems even seeing them as members of the human race. It was worse talking to them individually, and realising that they had no concept on any level of what was wrong with their actions. Not a fucking cluse. Even after having it carefully explained to them. Bravado or ignorance I could understand.... but these guys just didn't see anything morally problematic with their behaviour. I still have difficulty speaking to them.
I must admit it was a bit hard to see them as human before that! I mean, what about the one who looks like Stimpy?
Yeh, it's not nice walking round... An american guy offered me cash in Amsterdam, all I was doing was looking in a Restaurant window to see if there was a veggie option on the menu before going inside for some food. He just came up to me and said he'd buy me some food for a good time... waving cash under my nose. It really upset me. I mean, does the fact that they can buy sex off prostitutes confuse them into thinking that all women can be bought... sick perv. I hardly looked like a hooker either, with jeans / jumper / walking boots and rucksack.
Similar to when I went to Malaysia and Thailand with a mate ... he became obsessed with the vice scene out there, it was like he was trying to prove something, like seeing how many women he could buy in the shortest amount of time ... He kept accusing me of being a miserable bastard for not getting into the spirit of his mission. Despite the moral objections of the 'depraved abusing the deprived', buying a woman for sex just has no appeal. I left him to his own devices in the end and headed off alone until he was bored ... gave me a chance to see some of the rest of those countries and experience the true culture.
Yeah, well that's the other thing. Quite apart from the moral objection, I just don't see the appeal. IMHO, if you're idea of fun is shoving your dick inside someone who'd rather you took it out as soon as possible, then you're a sick fuck. Where's the fun if the other person's just bored?!?
