My veggie date is November 1980, so I would have LOVED to have had a list of hidden ingredients. (and the Internet)

Eat bulk grains, nuts, and beans rather than expensive meat substitutes. When I first became a veggie (1998) I had no idea how to mix foods together to create healthy, protein-rich meals and spent way too much money on frozen stuff like Morningstar and Boca. Check out your local health food store or a Trader Joes-- buying bulk staples will keep your body healthy and your pockets full.

Hmmm... for me I think a list of protein-alternates and a list of their protein content compared to meat counterparts would have been useful both for me AND for showing others!

I thought I would "bump" this thread to see if anyone else might have some advice for us newbies?

Plastic bagism, I loved what you said about the "meat" substitutes.

This is my re-transition into the veg. lifestyle and I would have LOVED to have known this back then.

I guess *maybe* I could qualify to add something as well, sine I was veg. before?

On any account, I'd like to add that if your veg. lifestyle is more expensive than your meat-eating days, then you're doing it all wrong.

Being a veg. doesn't have to cost alot, if you stick to the basics and keep away from the prepackaged stuff.

    Think Whole/Real Foods:

    Oatmeal
    Rice
    Beans
    A good variety of spices
    Fresh herbs
    Pastas
Veggies (Fresh is always best, but frozen would come in second, then canned)
    Fruits (Same as above)
    Nuts
    Nut butters
    Seeds
WHOLE WHEAT bread (I think there is a HUGE misconception about what a true whole wheat bread is. If you look at the label and it says, "Enriched whole wheat", it's not *whole* wheat.)

The rest is just kinda the icing on the cake, so to speak.

I would love to hear what everyone else thinks.:bigear:

You're not going to go into convulsions if you eat the wrong thing.

I'm pretty strict with what I eat. There is no wealth equal to good health. With that in mind, I allow for human incompetence either on my own behalf or that of others. I get on with life.

Advice #2 would be you're not going to starve come the holidays.

This is a big deal for many because of family gatherings, etc.

You'll do just fine. My belly has always been just as full as the meat eaters. With less side effects.

^^ for someone who loves Jah, you have no problem cheapening His name.
Seriously, tone it down some, please. Passion is great, but your words can turn people off your message. And I think you have a good message.
free speech does not preclude the use of restraint.
and cleanses are quite nice and are far from damned.

    anyhoo, back to the topic,

I always have a hard time explaining rennet and gelatin to new folks.
    But also bees wax.
Now, I'm not rigidly vegan, so I will use honey or wax from a known source, but unknown? Not so comfortable with that.
But how many new veggies know that beeswax can be in candies like candy corn?
Jelly Belly makes a candy corn sans egg (yay) but with beeswax.
I get it anyway, once a year, about a half pound.

    Jelly Bellies rock.

They're the only thing I ever had in common with Ronald Reagan. :)

The buttered popcorn and pumkin pie flavors alone are worth the drive to the candy store.

avocados are what its all about
casseroles are quick and easy to convert to vegetarian form

yeah, how do you use nutritional yeast?

i'm a horrible vegetarian. aside from loving beans and rice, i eat way too many carbs and a shit ton of cheese. part of it is i love cheese, so i wanna put it on everything. plus you put it in the oven and it melts and holds a casserole together, lol!

but bulk tvp is my friend. i get it at the market, it's not so expensive, takes only seconds to reconstitute with hot water, spice it up, and instant tacos "meat." it's delicious.

anyone know how to make it out of soy flour? like... how to texture it?

My diet is much like your own.

I don't worry about carbs because I'm a physically active person and burn off whatever I eat pretty quickly.

i use Burts Bees lip balm. i love it. it works so much better than the petrolium products out there. i also consider it more natural and better for me.
i am trying to go vegetarian and just wonder how you feel about this. it actually works better for me than chapstick etc.

I really do think you are in the wrong thread. i know you mean to be funny but for those of us trying to help animals and our health the jokes fall very flat.
