I used to paint quite a bit a couple years back, but I never got into it as much as I wanted to. So today, I decided to try out some oil paints for the first time. I haven't really tried out many techniques and I was kind of just playing around but I would just like to see what kind of advice some of you who have been painting with oils for a while could give me. I appreciate constructive criticism and I wont be offended. Like I said, this is my first time with oils so I obviously have some things to learn

That's exactly what I was thinking, an orange background, a light black swirl working inwards would work I think. It's a good start though, the character is great. Why did you decide to make him green?
that's fantastic, you have a truly unidue style. oils are my favourite medium and i find them easiest.
I love this! Is the creature from something, or inspired by something? Or just pure imagination? Either way, it's a lovely job!
I haven't seen this man anywhere. I'm actually glad some of you referred to him as a creature because thats what I was kind of going for. He isn't a creature, but because of his green skin, people assume he is a monster. I wanted to show how the "creature" would look defenseless and with emotion so your seeing the real him, you know? Moral of the day, it's not the outside that counts, it's the inside lol The inspiration was actually from my 2 year old niece. She was going through the "monster" stage, where monsters are everywhere and if anything looks remotely "monsterish" she would burst out in tears, and I would always trying to convince her its ok. It's funny because my Mom didn't really want me to show her the picture since she thought she would get scared but she didn't, even when I said "does he look like a monster?" She actually just pointed at him and said "no auntie jess, he's sad, look!" And guess what? She's not scared of monsters anymore

Yes, they are nice but since I just started, I'm a little over whelmed with everything lol I think I need to take a class and get my technique on point. Oh and thank you for the compliments everyone, I really do appreciate it
Oh and Raisin, I love the swirls on the planet in the first piece, and I also really like the third piece, it's interesting. Oh and I noticed the bud light cap, that reminds me of...me! Haha we should get together and paint sometime lol
yeah, that bud cap is a flasher pin haha. the third painting was my first one ever and i did it with my fingers . and a paint session would definataly be be dope
Good job for a first time! for quicker drying time and easier application use Linseed oil for a thinner. to avoid pencil marks I take yellow ocher and some linseed oil and mix to make a light sort of ink, then I block out what I'm going to paint. That dries quickly, but gives you time so if you do make a mistake you can just wipe it away and start over. It's also easier to cover than pencil. turpenoid is the best for cleaning your brushes, the least smelling is Weber odorless turpenoid comes in a blue and white container. also, the best canvas is linen! If you can, get your hands on some led based gesso. but BE CAREFUL! it creates a fantastic painting surface. and please please please! Never use canvas board! Oil is a real pain but gives great results, and some real great gradation and blending can be achieved. Keep working with them, you will figure out your own techniques and methods and create more beautiful artwork! Much love.
