I lIke the #7 idea... Buy Local... How about trying to change it to Idea #7 Practice Product Stewardship. It means the entire process of being a productive consumer by choosing local goods to ensure lesser imports of goods from other countries. Which means it will lessen the hauling of these materials and eventually lessen the production. anyway, great list though! Nicco Tan http://byee-1earth.blogspot.com
Actually, it's really easy to stop global warming. All we would have to do is start piling up all the world's garbage in the desert for a few years, then drop nuclear bombs on the garbage. The resulting smoke would create enough cloud cover that the sun wouldn't be able to get through, and everything would cool down really fast. I'm a little surprised that no one has thought of this, but this is probably just because very few people are at my very high intellectual level.
#1 - I plan to have one child by birth, get sterilized, and adopt additional children. #2 - I haven't completely stopped consumer, but I'm well on the way (I buy much less of what I don't need, and I plan to buy nothing this Christmas). #3 - I do go places, but I take the bus and subway rather than drving. #4 - That's a great idea, but no one I know would go for that #5 - See #3. #6 -Not yet.... #7 - Yep! #8 - I can't do my job from home, but it's part time, and I only take two classes per day at school, and like I said, I use public transit. #9 -I don't have kids yet, and whenever I try to tell my little brothers, they don't care. #10 - I've been a vegetarian since I was 12, and eat almost completely vegan now. So, I think considering my lot in life now, I'm doing pretty well.
I agree global warming is a real problem, but whether it's a human made issue or simply a natural long term atmospheric changes, I'm not so sure. But I agree with a opinion poll which says 'We don't need Global Warming to care about the environment.'
the number one way to combat global warming is to have them quit lying about data.. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2008/11/16/do1610.xml
That article is one of the most ridiculous string of lies I've read in a while. 1) No announcmenent was made about this October being the hottest on record. GISS makes announcements about the previous year well after the beginning of the year. The author's claim is complete BS, to say the least. 2) The September data for a few dozen stations in Siberia (out of many thousands worldwide) were accidentally sent in instead of the October numbers. Somebody screwed up, no question about it, but the error was quickly corrected. 3) The error was noticed within 24 hrs and the data were taken down immediately. They were replaced with the correct numbers within another 24 rhs. 4) Whining over one month's worth of temperature data COMPLETELY misses the point. If it were the hottest October on record it alone wouldn't mean a darn thing. If it were the coldest October on record it alone wouldn't mean a darn thing. One month of hot or cold isn't going to make a dent in a 30 year warming trend. It's the long-term trend that is going up. A hot day here, a snow flake there, impacts that trend so little it's utterly brainless to be fret over such a small interval of time. Doing so would be like saying that, since March 30th was 70 F but April 30th was only 60 F we're heading toward winter instead of summer. To say the least, arguments like that, and like the one levied in this article, are asinine. cj
Chris Although I agree with you about that article and the manipulation behind it, I think that may be a waste of time and intelligence that you analyze and answer every boomerang the personage involved throw to spoil the global warming arena. This World is full of people who specializes in making good reasons and reasonings to be useless. Suppose a magician says he's really a sorcerer and he makes things appear and disappear. How would you prove he's a swindler? Reasoning about magical disappearances and the violation of Thermodynamics laws? or better explaining the folks how the liar performed the trick, which blind spots of perception he exploited, and the best, where is hidden the vanished object? Human beings are quite far from perfection. Some decades ago they could hate Negroes, Jews, foreigners, Chinese, women, gay, whoever. Now such thing is not "trendy". As values in societies are arbitrary and changing things -as a proof of their arbitrariness, not of their validity, the same values that let them say "murder is a crime" and hang the murderer allow wrapping up a person in a uniform, send him or her to war, tell that "killing the enemy is a patriotic act" and organize a parade to welcome their heroes- The changing arbitrary values of society tell us today that it's bad -and unlawful- to show publicly or actively hate for racial, religious, national, political groups, gender, sexual orientation, et al. But hate survives anyway, and bigotry, chauvinism and pure violence attitudes have chosen tailored multiple enemies in order to survive, still please their holders and be kept undetected and free-thinker-like as much as they could. Thus, people who support candidate X are nasty, people who want that old building torn down are despicable, people who deny GW are Big Oil succubus, and people who alert about GW are either morons or immoral traders trying to make business from a false alarm. Some people even chose a shortcut and became misanthropes -hating everybody for the price of one-. These hate pros don't reason, they chose their enemy, trained one of the oldest and more primitive animal instincts in their own -the "image of the enemy"- and became specialized in selecting information from the wide menu that reality offers to confirm that the bad ones became worse every day and how rightly they do hate them a bit more every day. They can became cynical and decide that, as they lack skills and knowledge, they better make the skilled and knowledgeable within the enemy's camp to lost their time and waste their ability promoting silly discussions. This is why I write these paragraphs. Answering the very argument in an article caught in flight on the Internet by this magician -and other few magicians here- is not a waste of time, but it's quite like it when you just do that. I prefer to offer other instances of the same personage deceived or deceiving by spreading false concepts, and piling those kind of things until it is clear what underlies that show of, at least, poor judgment.
Global Warming doesn't exist...if it did, explain how this year had a much cooler all around year than last year. Last year was hot nearly every summer day, and it barely snowed. It's not even winter yet and it's been snowing, and the summer wasn't too hot this time around. Global warming is lie to fool the masses.
global warming is caused by the increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. carbon dioxide absorbs infra red (heat). the more carbon dioxide i the atmosphere the hotter the atmosphere gets. heat comes from the sun (around half) but a significant proportion of the suns energy comes via visible light (around half) , around seven percent is ultra violet. wikipedia says this: The Earth's surface and the clouds absorb visible and invisible radiation from the sun and re-emit much of the energy as infrared back to the atmosphere. Certain substances in the atmosphere, chiefly cloud droplets and water vapor, but also carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, and chlorofluorocarbons,[20] absorb this infrared, and re-radiate it in all directions including back to Earth. Thus the greenhouse effect keeps the atmosphere and surface much warmer than if the infrared absorbers were absent from the atmosphere.[21] white paint reflects visible frequencies, that is something coated with white is more likely going to reflect the visible frquencies back into space rather than absorb the light and re-emit it in the form of heat. as heat is absorbed by carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) by painting your roof white you do 2 things. 1 you reflect a significant proportion of the visible frequencies of the sun back into space 2 you keep your house cooler and are less likely to run the air conditioning as much, which in turn means less coal is burnt to keep your house cool. do a experiment find a white car and a dark coloured car. touch the surface you should be able to touch the surface of the white car with your palm flat on it. now try the dark coloured car and chances are you will burn yourself. this is because more energy is being absorbed by the dark colour. this dark coloured material now emits heat which is absorbed in turn by carbon dioxide. the white / lighter coloured material reflects most energy away from it, and a fair proportion of that sails back into space without heating the atmosphere. find a shed roof and paint it white and see the difference before and after. paint stuff white and save the planet!!!!
Biochar is the solution. It captures carbon and then is used as a soil amendment which improves crop yeilds. Win-win.
How ya gonna stop folks from getting pregnant?!! Figure that out and you are doing something no one else has been able to do! And might I add that if you followed all those other rules, especially the buying necessities locally, you wouldn't necessarily need to become vegetarians... That's mostly a matter of poor agricultural practices, and folks who think they HAVE to eat meat in order to survive (or at least to be happy)... If everything became more localized, folks wouldn't tend to group up into huge cities nearly as much, everything would be more spread out and spread around, and it would not be so much of a burden on the land and the earth to keep the same number of people fed. Any sort of monoculture is NOT a good thing! And think of all the fuel saved by not having to truck your food all the way from _________...
Almost everyone in the U.S. drives vehicles- we need to start thinking seriously about the way we get around. Biking and walking are great, but sometimes you just need a car. My solution is to not buy a car until 100% electric vehicles are available. They are cheaper, safer, cleaner, and more efficient than gas, hydrogen, and fuel-cell powered cars. Hybrids don't make sense either.... Gasoline engines waste 80% of their energy. Instead of using gasoline engines to power an electric battery to power a car, we should just be developing better battery technology. This is a topic you NEED to inform yourself about. Successful electric cars have already been built by GM and Toyota, but they were sued by Chevron (because electric cars means bad business for the oil industry) There are a lot of resources online to learn more about this topic. I would recommend the book "Two Cents Per Mile" by Nevres Cefo ( http://bit.ly/2centspermile ) It's a quick read, it's informative, it's interesting, and it provides a lot of good facts. If you have any more questions about electric cars, feel free to e-mail me at jb100ec@yahoo.com, and for news about electric cars follow me on twitter at http://twitter.com/2centsbook Thanks for your time, and I look forward to your responses. DONT BUY A CAR UNLESS ITS ELECTRIC!
Thats a great list. Only thing I'd say is that eating meat isn't the problem. It's that we don't raise it ourselves anymore and instead make it a factory process. Just like the best way to make energy changes is to be responsible for generating your own power with solar or wind or hydro, thus abandoning the grid and coal burning all together. The best way to decrease animal methane is to take responsibility for it and take some fuel out of the factory farming machine. Since the whole world won't voluntarily go veg, results could still be realized by instilling in future generations and appreciation for raising some livestock around the home.
