I really want to be a vegetarian, but I can't do it without the support of my parents. I told them my decision and they got really pissed off at me, and my mom hasn't been cooking anything but meat. I've been eating mac n cheese for 2 weeks, lol.

I've tried everything just for them to friggin' accept my decision. Everytime I bring it up they both go "I don't want to hear it."

I don't understand what their problem is.

Do you guys know how I can get them accept my decision?

Go on a hunger strike. If they love you, and I'm sure they do, they won't let you starve. Just tell them if they can't respect your decision to not partake of rotting flesh from a dead animal then you just won't eat.. period. If it means that much to you then you need to take a more definitive stand for what you believe in. If that doesn't work then I can only suggest you eat anything in your house that's not meat. They've got to have more in the fridge and pantry than a bunch of corpses. Stay strong my friend! Do you get an allowance? If so spend it on food you want to eat. Buy for yourself, cook for yourself and don't let them win on this one. Your decision to not eat meat is not only an important one for yourself but is so for the animals too. It's a noble and respectable decision and they need to understand this. Good luck! Keep us posted.

My dad wasn't particularly thrilled when I went veggie either. It sucks a whole lot, I realize this. I think what you need to do is just eat whatever you can find that has no meat in it, and like the guy above me said buy your own food if possible. For me I learned to cook and started making my own meals. If you're doing your own cooking then no one can say anything about it. Eventually they'll understand that you're serious and that it's not just some rebellious teenage phase you're going through and they'll probably come around. I think a lot of parents get irritated because they think their kids are doing it to rebel, but once you've kept it up for a while and they realize that it's your morals that are making you do it and not some deep desire to piss them off then they shouldn't mind so much.

    Good luck!

Thank you guys so much! My mom voluntarily took me to the Farmers' Market, today. It's like overnight she's become supportive. Wierdness, lol.

But, yeah. I told her I'd cook for myself and she could eat dead animals if she wanted. And she suddenly became supportive. o_O I don't understand it either, lol.

just dont eat the meat. carnivores are not easy to convert.
i drove by a mobile slaughter truck in my neighborhood some day in February. (-where a truck will come to your house and slaughter your animal right there, haul it off and brinng the meat later.) so the truck pulls up to their yard and there are 5 cows in the front yard. the dude gets out with shotgun in hand and walks over to the cows with some alfalfa. the cows love that stuff. so i thought he would get the cow out of the pen, lead it to the other side of the truck and shoot it, load it and go.
no. it was not that humane.
he shot the cow right there in front of the other cows and proceeded to drive the slaughter truck INTO the front yard. he strung up the dead cow and decapitated it, skinned it and turned it into 2 sides of beef in 15 minutes. meanwhile, the other cows are circling the horror in a pack with wide scared shitless eyes rolling around.
    it was fuct up.
Ive never seen anything so gruesome and cruel in my life.
I havent eaten any cows since that day.

Congratulations! You're becoming a veggie girl...wooo hooooo! Sorry. Why would they be angry about a decision that is so positive? Maybe they feel as though you're rebelling. You know the american dietetic association supports the vegetarian diet. Click on the link...print it and leave this around for your parents to read....

    Congrats on the change :)

I think parents are the hardest people to tell, but if you can convince them any other problem will be simple by comparison.

My family weren't that suppourtive, but they've accepted it now and just let me get on with it. (it took a year  )

It'a not good to be eating cheese and milk stuff a lot when you first go veggie, it will take the place of all the meals that had meat in them and that's not healthy. But good luck on the switch!

When my dad found out that I was vegetarian during the summer, he told my mom to stop buying all non-meat products....so I just didn't eat. They caved first:) dont give up.

    Hey, congrats!

I'm glad she is going to support your decision now. It usually just takes a little time for parents to adjust. My mom wasn't too excited when I first told her I didn't want to eat meat any longer (which has been a few years ago) but after a little while she got used to it.

I think it's partly because they don't understand, or don't know enough about it to make intelligent decisions. Maybe if you would try educating your dad more,(if he's not already ok with it) it might help.

For the most part, my advice is to give them some time to get used to the idea, and hopefully they will come around.
I just told my mom last night about my decision to go vegan and her reaction was "Great, why don't you just graze on grass from now on?" Lol.. she was of course being sarcastic. She's gotten used to me having my own food to eat and cook. Well, I hope things work out well for you. :)

I guess I'm the only one who's parents supported my decision. :(
They do eat meat, but only directly from the butcher. My father is a nature freak (he yelled at my little brother for ripping out a flower...<.<, and loves me even more now that I'm vegitarian.), and loves animals. My mom loves horses, and can't stand watching anything suffer. They always try to prevent buying meat from factory farms.

Maybe it's because my family's German and not American? Germany loves biodynamic and organic. When you go into a restaurant, you see 'MADE OUT OF ORGANIC APPLES!"
or..." TRY OUR LOCAL FARMER'S BRATWURST!!!" almost 80% of the time, fast foods are quite rare too...guess I'm just lucky.:)
I live in America half of my life, and boy! do they love their 99 cent Hamburgers made so cheap because it's from a factory farm!!

I wish some of you guys had more supportive parents...:(

of course you guys will have different decisions on this... but still it should be your decision.. It's your body so you should decide what to put in it... I'm a vegetarian!! Just go for it. Do what you feel is right./.. Your parents will just have to accept it.

    I am proud of you!
    But:

What brand of mac and cheese are you eating? If it's kraft, try to switch because kraft has rennet as an ingredient.

Rennet isn't made out of slaughtered new-born calve's stomache anymore.
I read they make it out of fungi, and messed with bacteria now! I read it in the all knowing wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rennet

a though tjust passed my mind...is a bacteria an animal??

ah...yes i was your age when i became a vegetarian. my dad did not like it either. however we came to the agreement that i would 1) read up about this lifestyle 2) cook my own food (he hates tofu) 3) slowly meld into it. basically instead of going meatless cold turkey (ha ha turkey!) i gave up red meat, just ate chicken and fish, then gave up chicken, ate garden burgers and lots of veggies and fish, then i cut out fish and i was a full vegetarian by 16. right now i am slowly becoming vegan both hubby(who is a vegetarian) and dad (who ironically is slowly giving up red meat) support me now. the idea is to show proof through research that this is a healthier lifestyle. that is what i did. my mom (parents are divorced) still is confusd about it. the other day when i went to visit her for dinner she asked me if i was the kind of vegetarian who ate meat. she was not kidding. hope this helps...and pm if you have questions or if they are still giving you trouble. peace out.
