I just bought another rifle, a 30/06. Now I'm waiting for the scope and mounts to arrive in the mail.

Wow, a lot more gun owners on here than I expected. And I'm willing to bet that most are good people who aren't necessarily hell bent on killing. This should be a wake up call to those who bought into the gun-nut-psychopath stereotype.

    I don't think anyone is pushing a gun-nut-psychopath stereotype.

There are as you say a lot of responsible gun owners out there who never kill a person.

But, you cannot deny that there are gun-nut-psychopaths out there. That has been documented from Columbine to that school in Scotland, to any major city in America where people are wantonly killed by sociopaths with guns.

A stereotype is saying that ALL gun owners are such and that is wrong. An equal error is to say that NO gun owners are.

well, shale, it's kinda like me...most people I've met think that because I own a spear or a tomahawk or a blowgun, I'm some kind of nut. Here in texas, I can freely transport a rifle, but I've had cops show up because I've been practicing forms with my spear in my backyard.

It doesn't matter what kind of weapon it is, because if someone's determined to be a psychopathic nut-job and start randomly offing people, the means they use, whether it be a rock, a pointed stick, a sniper rifle or a nuclear weapon...they don't really matter. The type of person holding it does...whether they'll use it or not..and why.

btw, just in case I wasn't clear, I agree with you.

Blaming crimes on guns is like blaming a pedophile's dick for their disgusting behavour.

yeah, guns by themselves don't kill people. without a person loading it and pulling the trigger, they're just an interestingly shaped paper weight.

on the other hand, if a person's determined to kill, they have any hundreds of means at their disposal, the firearm just happens to be one of the more easily accomplished ways of doing so. Using a garrote's kinda difficult without some practiced skill, knives are lethal, in the right hands, but require someone to get 'up close and personal', swords are bulky and require some skill. A spear is almost impossible to hide, but doesn't' require a huge amount of skill, a bow is the same. There's always a club, but the meaning I'm going for is simply compared to a blade, or a garrote, or some other means of death, a firearm has a relatively simple and easy to learn 'point and click' interface. not 'much' skill to point and keep pulling the trigger until someone goes down (which, despite what's shown in movies, and shale, having carried, and I'm sure pulled his piece from time to time, can back me up on this) one shot just doesn't do it unless you get lucky....and lucky isn't something to count on in that situation.

No, I would be afraid that it might be put into the wrong hands or someone could be accidentally shot. I'd rather use the 20 knives I have in my kitchen to defend myself.

I want a gun, but right now the money is needed elsewhere. like rent. Also, once I graduate from grad school, I would like to try hunting. My dad grew up in Tacoma, WA and most of my mom's family is from rural MS and they hunt a lot. My dad and my mom's dad both have rifles and shotguns, and my dad has a .22.

Once we were out in the middle of the ocean fishing and I was standing on the dive platform of the boat having a piss. My younger brother had fished a coconut out of the water with a net and threw it far from the boat. Then he took the gun and while I was standing on the dive platform pissing, he began to fire at the coconut. Startled me so bad I fell off the boat into the water, pissing all over myself in the process.

I think that if everyone is educated, keeping a gun in the house can be safe. I want a gun safe that has a fingerprint or palmprint reader. That way only I (Or other allowed adults, like my wife.) can get in. But I can get in quick if I think I am getting robbed.

The Right To Bare Arms is in our constitution. If we do not fight for each and every one of our Rights by constitution we will surely loose them. We have already lost our right to a speedy trial, our Right to persue our happiness and in some states our Right to bare arms. We live out in the country outside a Small town and it would take 30 minutes or more for help to arrive, we'd hafta circle the wagons and defend ourselves untill help arrived. We are prepared for this occation. I believe that every citizen should be able to defend themselves, their family and property. I also believe that we should be able to fish, hunt and farm to sustain ourselves. We depend on hunting and fishing and farming to survive. I own a 410/22 over n under that my Daddy left to me and a remington 45' classic collectors edition that was a gift. I have been shooting since I was 8 yrs old. I grew up in the atom bomb era and into the Watts Riot era in LA and my daddy taught us all how to shoot and survive in the wilderness.. we use to go for weeks on survival exqurssion in the mountains, with our servival belts and backpacks and canteens. We never handled the guns unless we were cleaning them or using them to hunt or sighting them in. I have the utmost respect for firearms, it's in my blood. What worries me is all these uneducated ppl running around mis-using them. The cities are full of them and the overflow is flitering down into the country. If they took our only defence away we would become easy prey for preditors that lurk in the shodows. Around here, they have gun classes for young hunters, they have to take the class before the can get a hunting licence. They have strict penelties for not following the rules.. but if everyone followed the program there wouldn't be an issue would there.
